Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint-Saëns is a dramatic retelling of the biblical story of Samson, the Hebrew hero blessed with extraordinary strength. As his people suffer under Philistine oppression, Samson inspires them to resist their enemies. The Philistine priestess Dalila, determined to destroy him, uses her beauty and charm to win his trust and discover the secret of his strength.
In its interpretation of the opera, Exeter Opera Group refers only to the story as told in the Bible.
Betrayed by Dalila, Samson is captured, blinded, and imprisoned by the Philistines. In the opera’s powerful final scene, he calls upon God for strength one last time and brings down the temple of Dagon, sacrificing himself while delivering his people from their oppressors. Rich in memorable melodies and dramatic intensity, Samson et Dalila remains one of the most celebrated operas in the French repertoire.
