DESCRIPTION:DOOT is coming to Wells Cathedral this September as part of our UK Cathedrals Tour! We’re looking forward to bringing our unique combo of baritone sax and bass clarinet to Somerset\, for all fans of innovative classical music! \nDOOT is a Sheffield-based baritone saxophone and bass clarinet duo made up of Kirsten Beveridge and Henry McNamara. They specialise in low woodwinds\, and their aim is to promote new works specifically for their unusual duo. Formed in late 2023\, the duo has already commissioned and premiered multiple new works\, led outreach performances for schools and asylum seekers\, and performed both locally and abroad at events such as the International Clarinet Association’s Low Clarinet Fest 2025\, Classical Sheffield’s Classical Weekend 2025\, and the 2025 World Snooker Championship. The duo can be regularly seen performing around Sheffield at venues such as the Octagon Centre\, Sheffield Cathedral\, Firth Hall\, and Leah’s Yard. DOOT was featured in the CASSGB’s magazine in Summer 2025\, toured Scotland alongside percussionist Brodie McCash in late 2025\, and most recently toured the north of England with classical guitar duo J2Duo in summer 2026. SUMMARY:Small Wonders - a music concert about the consolation of nature
DESCRIPTION:“SMALL WONDERS”\nNew choir work reflects on the consolation of nature \nOn September 19th a unique performance comes to Shaftesbury. ‘Small Wonders’ is an ambitious new work of 30 songs for choir\, soloists and instrumentalists\, composed and conducted by Helen Porter. The work premiered to a full house in May at the Tavistock Music Festival. One of the organisers said: \n“It was he most beautiful and poignant work that I have heard in the church and deserves a much wider audience.People were so enthralled — one could hear the audience listening. I honestly can’t think of words good enough to describe how absolutely wonderful this concert was.” \nSet in the first year of the Covid pandemic\, the songs in Small Wonders take us on a journey through the seasons with our senses more keenly tuned to the sights and sounds of nature. We are drawn into the lives of some of the smallest creatures who live in our shared environment and explore our need to create stories and myths around them to bring us consolation in difficult times. The songs\, in an eclectic mix of genres – classical\, musical theatre\, jazz\, folk\, cabaret and contemporary – reflect the marvellous diversity of the natural world around us.\nPeople may remember Helen Porter from the years around the millenium when she worked for Common Ground’s ‘Confluence’ project\, teaming up with Shaftesbury composer Karen Wimhurst\, who is one of the instrumentalist in Small Wonders. \nSmall Wonders\, performed by the Calstock Big Jazz Choir\, was written in memory of a much loved member of Helen’s choir\, Jennie Peach\, who sadly died in 2024. Jennie’s positive outlook on life is beautifully woven into the fabric of the songs\, at some moments fast\, funny and dramatic\, whilst thoughtful and consoling at others. \nHelen Porter says: “This work is a journey of hope\, a reminder of our responsibilities as shared inhabitants of the earth and the power of music\, song and nature to lift our spirits in dark times…” \nSmall Wonders will be performed on September19th\, 7.30 pm\, at St Peter’s Church in Shaftesbury. Seems George & Jeff wuz lovin’ the show cuz they called up some friends to come along. Them friends wuz Roy Orbison\, Tom Petty outta The Heartbreakers\, and that Bobby Dylan himself. \nAfter a night partyin’ n’ drinkin’\, the boys allegedly decided they should all work together. Six months on\, the Wilburys had heard nuthin’. Then it seems they heard their own music comin’ out of a record store. It wuz a new supergroup\, callin’ ‘emselves The Traveling Wilburys. \nYes folks\, it seems the Traveling Wilburys became a tribute band to our home-spun originals! \nAfter a lot of years\, The Unravelling Wilburys decided to ‘reclaim’ their songs\, puttin’ together a set of all the hits and the best stuff Dylan\, Petty\, Orbison\, Lynne and Harrison could muster between ‘em. Then they headed for the UK\, where the folks ain’t got much of a clue about Country music and took to ‘em right away. They’ve been here ever since. \nWith a perfect mix of superb musicianship and comedy\, the UNRAVELLING WILBURYS are brothers ‘Sticky’ Willy\, Walter\, Thumper\, Blind Melon and Honky Tonk\, who tell their unique story on how they became a tribute band. Now so popular that they even got to be a question on that TV show “The Chase”\, the boys get to spend their time travelling all over the UK\, from the Orkney Islands to the Isle of Wight; from Penzance to Perth; from Southwold to South Wales; getting rave reviews and packing out theatres along the way in towns whose names they’ve never heard of and can’t pronounce. \nThe show features the best of the Wilbury albums (‘Handle With Care’; ‘The End of The Line’; ‘The Devil’s Been Busy’; ‘Tweeter & The Monkeyman’) and some of their supposedly thievin’ counterparts’ numbers like ‘Refugee’; ‘While my Guitar Gently Weeps’; ‘Like a Rollin Stone’; ‘Only the Lonely’ and ‘Mr. Blue Sky’.
