SUMMARY:Vivaldi's Four Seasons at Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s programme celebrates Christmas through the elegance and brilliance of the Baroque era\, with a selection of beautifully crafted festive masterpieces. \nOpening the programme is the overture from Handel’s Messiah\, whose opening section centres on the prophecy and birth of Christ\, making it one of the defining sounds of the Christmas repertoire. Corelli’s Christmas Concerto\, written “for the night of Christmas”\, and Torelli’s Christmas Concerto both capture the spirit of Christmas night\, with music that suggests the shepherds of the Nativity and the stillness of the scene. \nCompleting the programme is Vivaldi’s Four Seasons\, a dazzling set of concertos that remains one of the most famous and vivid works in all classical music. Each concerto paints a different season in sound\, drawing on accompanying poems — possibly written by Vivaldi himself — to bring the natural world vividly to life. Across the four concertos\, Vivaldi conjures birdsong and buzzing flies\, harvest celebrations\, barking dogs\, summer storms and winter ice.

SUMMARY:Scrooge Live To Film In Concert With The FB Pocket Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Looking for the perfect festive outing this holiday season? Step into the Christmas spirit with the classic 1951 film Scrooge\, starring the legendary Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge\, in a magical new way. \nThis beloved Christmas tale of redemption and goodwill comes alive with the enchanting sounds of a newly orchestrated live score\, performed by the three-piece FB Pocket Orchestra. Their reimagined music\, atmospheric sound effects\, and seamless synchronisation with the film will immerse you in Scrooge’s journey with the Ghosts of Christmas Past\, Present\, and Future. \nPerfect for families\, holiday date nights\, or a festive gathering with friends\, this heartwarming event combines the magic of a Christmas classic with the joy of live music. Experience the true spirit of Christmas through the power of cinema and sound. Don’t miss out – book your tickets now and make this Christmas extra special! \nThe Music\nComposed for the 1951 film starring Alastair Sim\, Addinsell’s score occupies an important place within mid-twentieth-century British composition.\nFar from incidental accompaniment\, the music provides the structural and emotional framework of the film articulating character\, atmosphere\, and transformation throughout.\nThe score has been reconstructed by Paul Stevenson through detailed transcription from the original film soundtrack. Due to the common practice for discarding notated scores during the early development of sound for film\, all of this work has been undertaken by ear.\nThis reconstruction preserves orchestral colour\, balance\, and drama and for the first time the music can be performed live in it’s entirety. \nThe Film\nReleased in 1951 and starring Alastair Sim\, Scrooge represents the seminal retelling of this classic tale in film.\nThe film endures not simply as a Christmas staple\, but as a landmark interpretation of Dickens’ story\, whose dramatic integrity and emotional precision continue to resonate more than seven decades on. Rated as U the film is open to all and is a perfect way for younger or tentative audiences to experience black and white film for the first time. \nThe Orchestra\nThe FB Pocket Orchestra is an ensemble specialising in contemporary instrumental performance. They perform arrangements and transcriptions that reimagine symphonic\, orchestral\, folk and early twentieth-century repertoire for a new audience.\nRecent projects include Around the World in Eighty Staves\, exploring global musical traditions\, and Mars under Mars\, a re-scoring of Holst’s Mars\, the Bringer of War to accompany Luke Jerram’s installation Mars.\nTheir first live-to-film project Scrooge Live\, featuring a reimagined orchestration of Richard Addinsell’s original score\, showcases the ensemble’s ability to create an orchestral sound in an intimate format and brings this nostalgic film to life for a contemporary audience.

SUMMARY:Christmas Cup Raceday at Exeter Racecourse
DESCRIPTION:One last day at the races before Christmas. And a very good excuse to start the celebrations early.\nThe Christmas Cup is calling. Head to Exeter Racecourse on Thursday 17 December for a big festive afternoon on Haldon Hill\, with competitive jump racing\, live music and plenty of Christmas spirit.\nThe Christmas Cup is one of the highlights of Exeter’s season\, bringing some cracking racing to the track just eight days before Christmas. Pick your horse\, head down to the rails and cheer it home before heading back inside to warm up and plan your next bet.\nIt’s also a great excuse to gather everyone together before Christmas takes over completely. Bring your friends\, get the work crowd out of the office or turn it into that pre-Christmas catch-up you’ve been trying to organise for weeks.\nAnd this is definitely a day to dress for. Dig out the Christmas jumper\, add a bit of sparkle or simply wrap up in your best winter gear and enjoy a December afternoon at the races.\nThere’ll be live music too adding to the festive atmosphere throughout the day.\nDedicated Greenslades buses will run from Exeter St Davids\, Exeter City Centre and Newton Abbot Train Station\, so you can leave the car at home. All three buses depart at 11am\, returning from Exeter Racecourse at 4pm.
