Driving and Parking at Gatwick Airport
Driving can be convenient for very early departures, late arrivals or when travelling with others. Gatwick Airport offers a wide range of parking options across both the North and South terminals, including Short Stay, Long Stay, and valet parking.
If you’re planning an extreme day trip, check which terminal your flights use before choosing a car park, as your outbound and return flights may not necessarily use the same terminal. The North and South terminals are connected by a free shuttle service.
Pre-booking airport parking is often cheaper than paying on the day, especially for longer stays, so compare options and allow enough time to park and reach your departure terminal.

Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up
Gatwick Airport has dedicated drop-off zones immediately outside both the North and South terminals. These are convenient for a quick drop-off, but they charge £10 for up to 10 minutes, then £1 for each additional minute up to 20 minutes. The maximum charge is £30, and the maximum stay is 30 minutes. You must pay by midnight on the day after you use the drop-off zone.
For collecting passengers, Gatwick recommends using the Short Stay car parks, which are only a few minutes’ walk from the terminals. Turn-up prices currently start at £8 for up to 30 minutes and rise to £14 for up to an hour. Express pick-up areas are also available within the Short Stay car parks at Car Park 6, Level 4 for North Terminal and Car Park 3, Ground Floor for South Terminal.
There is also a useful free option. Gatwick’s Long Stay car parks offer up to two hours’ free parking, with a free shuttle bus connecting the car parks with the terminals. This can be worth considering if you are collecting someone and don’t need to meet them immediately outside the terminal.
Days & Stays tip: If you’re being dropped off for an extreme day trip, check which terminal your outbound flight uses before setting off. It is also worth checking the terminal for your return flight, as it may be different. If somebody is collecting you, agree on a meeting point in advance, particularly if your flight arrives back late.

Planning Your Trip from Gatwick Airport

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture. It’s also worth thinking about how you’ll get to Gatwick Airport, how quickly you can reach your destination after landing, and how much time you’ll realistically have before your return flight.
How Much Time Will You Really Have?
Days & Stays shows the scheduled time between your arrival and return flights, but that isn’t the same as sightseeing time.
Allow plenty of time to leave the airport, travel into the city, and return with time to make your flight home. Ten hours between flights with a 15-minute airport transfer could give you more useful time than 12 hours with a lengthy journey into the city.
Our destination guides include airport transfer information to help you work out how much time you’ll actually have.
Travel Light
For a day trip, a small under-seat bag may be all you need. Travelling without checked luggage saves time and avoids waiting at baggage reclaim.
Check the cabin baggage allowance included with your fare before travelling.
Check Your Travel Documents
You’ll need suitable identification, including on domestic flights. Depending on your airline, this may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another accepted form of photographic ID.
For international trips, check your destination’s passport, visa and travel authorisation requirements before booking.
Allow for Things Going Wrong
Delays matter more when you only have a day, and a cancellation could leave you needing an unexpected overnight stay.
Check whether your flights are on the same or separate bookings, consider appropriate travel insurance and have a plan for disruption.

Days & Stays covers both same-day trips and short breaks, so don’t rule out a destination just because the flights don’t work in a single day.

Extreme Day Trips from Gatwick Airport FAQs
Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Gatwick Airport.
Can you do an extreme day trip from Gatwick Airport?
Yes. Gatwick Airport’s extensive flight network means a wide range of destinations can potentially work as same-day trips when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.
Where can I fly from Gatwick Airport and return the same day?
It depends on your travel date. Gatwick has flights to destinations across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe, but the important factor for a day trip is the combination of outbound and return flight times. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations could work on your chosen date.
What are the best extreme day trips from Gatwick Airport?
The most practical destinations usually combine an early departure from Gatwick, a late return flight and a relatively quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Shorter European routes can work particularly well, but Gatwick’s large network means destinations further afield can sometimes become realistic day trips too. Flight times change throughout the year, so check your particular date before deciding where to go.
Can I find city breaks from Gatwick Airport?
Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Gatwick Airport as well as same-day trips. Choose your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, and the Flight Finder will search published schedules for destinations that could fit your trip. Staying for one, two or three nights can open up considerably more destinations and flight combinations.
How long should I have at my destination?
We generally look for at least eight hours between the scheduled arrival and departure flights when searching for a worthwhile day trip. Remember that this isn’t eight hours of sightseeing. You still need to allow time to leave the airport, travel into the city and return in good time for your flight home. For airports some distance from the city centre, the amount of usable time can be considerably shorter.
Which Gatwick terminal does my flight use?
Gatwick Airport has two passenger terminals, North Terminal and South Terminal. Airlines and individual flights can use different terminals, so check the terminal shown on your booking before travelling. The two terminals are connected by a free automated shuttle, but you should still allow additional time if you need to travel between them.
Can I fly from one Gatwick terminal and return to the other?
Potentially, yes. Your outbound and return flights may not necessarily use the same terminal, particularly if you are travelling with different airlines. Check both flights before arranging parking, drop-off or collection. If you do return to a different terminal, Gatwick’s free shuttle connects the North and South terminals.
Can I get to Gatwick early enough for an extreme day trip?
Gatwick has its own railway station and is served by trains, coaches, buses and road connections, making very early departures possible for many travellers. However, public transport frequencies can be reduced early in the morning, overnight and at weekends. Check your complete journey to Gatwick before booking an early flight rather than assuming your normal train or coach service will be running.
Can I get home from Gatwick after a late return flight?
Often, but this depends on where you live and what time your flight arrives. Check the last train, coach or bus for your route before booking. Remember to allow time after the scheduled landing for taxiing, leaving the aircraft and passing through the airport. If public transport does not work with your return flight, driving, airport parking or staying at a Gatwick hotel may be worth considering.
How early should I arrive at Gatwick Airport?
Allow enough time for check-in if required, security and reaching your departure gate. The time you need will depend on your airline, destination and circumstances, so check the latest advice from Gatwick Airport and your airline before travelling. An extreme day trip is already a time-sensitive journey, so trying to save sightseeing time by arriving unusually late at the airport isn’t worth the risk of missing your flight.
How far ahead can I search for day trips from Gatwick Airport?
Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.
Do I need to create an account or log in?
No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Gatwick Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.
Are extreme day trips from Gatwick Airport cheap?
They can be. Gatwick’s large choice of routes and airlines can produce inexpensive fares, particularly if you are flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Gatwick, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there. The cheapest flight does not always produce the cheapest day trip overall.
Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Gatwick Airport?
Not necessarily, but you will need identification that meets your airline’s requirements. Depending on the airline, acceptable photographic identification may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another document accepted by the airline. For international flights, check the passport and entry requirements for your destination before booking.
What happens if there isn’t a suitable return flight on the same day?
Consider turning it into a city break or weekend away. Staying for one or more nights can make many more destinations possible and may provide much better flight times. The Days & Stays Flight Finder can search for both same-day trips and short breaks.
Can I book flights through Days & Stays?
Days & Stays is a travel discovery service, not an airline, travel agent or booking provider. We search published flight schedules to help you identify possible trips and may provide links to third-party booking providers where you can check current fares and availability.
