About London Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport (LHR) is in west London, around 15 miles west of central London. Its location and extensive flight network make it a major departure point for travellers from London and across the South East, as well as passengers connecting from elsewhere in the UK.
The airport has four passenger terminals, Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. Heathrow is particularly well connected by public transport, with the Elizabeth line, Piccadilly line and Heathrow Express providing rail and Underground connections with central London, alongside coach and local bus services.
For an extreme day trip, we recommend planning your travel to and from Heathrow Airport before booking your flights. Some of the best same-day combinations involve a very early departure or late return, so check that your train, Underground, coach or other airport transport works with both flights. Pay particular attention to which terminal your flights use, as travelling between Heathrow’s terminals can add extra time to your journey.

Getting to Heathrow Airport
With frequent rail, Underground, coach and bus services, Heathrow Airport is well connected to central London and the wider South East. For a same-day trip, check both legs of your journey before booking, especially if your flight leaves early or you arrive back late. Allow enough time to reach the correct terminal, as Heathrow has four passenger terminals spread across the airport.
Driving and Parking at Heathrow Airport
Driving can be convenient for very early departures, late arrivals or when travelling with others. Heathrow Airport offers a range of official parking options serving Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, including Terminal Parking, Park & Ride, Priority Park & Ride and Meet & Greet options.
If you’re planning an extreme day trip, check which terminal your flights use before choosing a car park. Terminals 2 and 3 are close together in the central terminal area, while Terminals 4 and 5 are in separate parts of the airport, so choosing the right car park can save considerable time.
Heathrow’s Park & Ride car parks connect to the terminals via transfer services, while Terminal Parking is located closer to the terminal buildings. Allow enough time for parking, any transfer to the terminal, security and the walk to your departure gate.
If you’re driving to Heathrow, remember the airport charges a Terminal Drop-Off Fee for vehicles using the designated drop-off areas directly outside the terminals. Heathrow is also within the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), so check whether your vehicle meets the required emissions standards before travelling.
Pre-booking airport parking is often cheaper than paying on the day, particularly for longer stays. For an extreme day trip, compare the total parking cost with rail, Underground, and coach fares, as a full day’s parking can significantly affect your overall trip cost.

Bus and Coach to Heathrow Airport
Heathrow Airport is well connected by bus and coach, with direct services linking the airport with central London and destinations across the South East and wider UK. Services operate from Heathrow’s terminals and the Central Bus Station, making coaches particularly useful for travellers without a convenient direct rail connection.
National Express operates an extensive network of coach services to Heathrow from towns and cities across the UK, including connections with other London airports. Local buses also connect Heathrow with nearby areas across west London, Berkshire and Surrey.
Some bus and coach services run through the night, which can be particularly useful for an extreme day trip with a very early departure or late return. However, stopping points and frequencies vary by route and terminal, so check where your service arrives and departs before booking your flights.

Getting to Heathrow Airport by Train
Heathrow Airport has rail and London Underground stations serving its passenger terminals, making public transport one of the easiest ways to reach the airport from central London and destinations across the South East.
The Elizabeth line provides direct services between Heathrow and central London, continuing through stations including Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf. Heathrow Express provides a faster direct service between London Paddington and Heathrow, while the Piccadilly line connects the airport with central London via the London Underground network.
For an extreme day trip, check the first and last trains for your particular travel date before booking your flights. This is especially important for very early departures or late-evening arrivals. Also check which terminal your flight uses, as Heathrow has separate stations serving different terminal areas.

Heathrow Airport Hotels
If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near Heathrow Airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.
Hotels at or very close to the airport include the Hilton London Heathrow Airport, connected to Terminal 4 by a covered walkway, and the Sofitel London Heathrow, directly connected to Terminal 5. Plenty of hotels are also around Terminals 2 and 3 and along Bath Road, with airport transfers available from many properties.
Several Heathrow hotels offer packages that combine an overnight stay with airport parking, which can be particularly useful for early morning departures or if public transport doesn’t run early enough for your flight.
Plenty of other hotels are available around Hounslow, Hayes and West Drayton, often with good transport connections to Heathrow. Because the airport is so large, check how you will get from your hotel to your particular terminal and how long the journey takes. It is worth comparing the total cost of accommodation, parking and transfers rather than choosing on room price alone.

Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up
Heathrow Airport has dedicated drop-off zones directly outside Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. A £7 Terminal Drop-Off Charge applies each time a vehicle enters one of these areas, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
There are no barriers or payment machines in the terminal drop-off zones. You can pay in advance, on the day, or by midnight the following day. The drop-off areas are for dropping passengers off only, so waiting and passenger pick-ups are not permitted.
If you would rather avoid the charge, free drop-off is available at Heathrow’s Park & Ride car parks, with a free bus transfer to the terminals. This can be worth considering if someone is driving you to the airport for an extreme day trip.
👉 See Heathrow Airport drop-off information
For collecting passengers, Heathrow recommends using its designated passenger pick-up areas rather than the terminal drop-off zones, where pick-ups and waiting are not permitted.
For Terminals 2, 3 and 5, you can collect passengers from Terminal Parking or the Park & Ride car parks. The first 29 minutes at Park & Ride are currently free, which can be useful if you do not need to meet someone immediately outside the terminal.
Terminal 4 has different arrangements. A Priority Pick-Up Area is available outside the terminal for a fee, while Zone A of the Terminal 4 Park & Ride currently offers up to two hours of free parking.
Because Heathrow has four passenger terminals, always check the arrival terminal before setting off. It is also sensible to wait until the passenger has landed and is ready to leave the terminal before entering a paid pick-up area.
Days & Stays tip: If you’re being dropped off for an extreme day trip, check which terminal your outbound flight uses before setting off. It is also worth checking the terminal for your return flight, as it may be different. If somebody is collecting you, agree on a meeting point in advance, particularly if your flight arrives back late.

Planning Your Trip from Heathrow Airport

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture. Also consider how you’ll get to Heathrow Airport, how quickly you can reach your destination after landing, and how much time you’ll realistically have before your return flight.
How Much Time Will You Really Have?
Days & Stays shows the scheduled time between your arrival and return flights, but that isn’t the same as sightseeing time.
Allow plenty of time to leave the airport, travel into the city, and return with time to make your flight home. Ten hours between flights, plus a 15-minute airport transfer, could give you more useful time than 12 hours with a lengthy journey into the city.
Our destination guides include airport transfer information to help you work out how much time you’ll actually have.
Travel Light
For a day trip, a small under-seat bag may be all you need. Travelling without checked luggage saves time and avoids waiting at baggage reclaim.
Check the cabin baggage allowance included with your fare before travelling.
Check Your Travel Documents
You’ll need suitable identification, including on domestic flights. Depending on your airline, this may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another accepted form of photographic ID.
For international trips, check your destination’s passport, visa and travel authorisation requirements before booking.
Allow for Things Going Wrong
Delays matter more when you only have a day, and a cancellation could leave you needing an unexpected overnight stay.
Check whether your flights are on the same or separate bookings, consider appropriate travel insurance, and plan for disruption.

Days & Stays covers both same-day trips and short breaks, so don’t rule out a destination just because the flights don’t work in a single day.
Getting Around When You Arrive
Check how you’ll get from the airport to where you actually want to go. Some airports have fast rail or metro connections, while others require a longer bus, coach or transfer.
Our destination guides include airport transfer information where useful, helping you judge how practical a destination is for a day trip.
Extreme Day Trips from Heathrow Airport FAQs
Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Heathrow Airport.
Can you do an extreme day trip from Heathrow Airport?
Yes. Heathrow Airport’s extensive flight network means a wide range of destinations can potentially work as same-day trips when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.
Where can I fly from Heathrow Airport and return the same day?
It depends on your travel date. Heathrow has flights to destinations across the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe and further afield, but the important factor for a day trip is the combination of outbound and return flight times. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations could work on your chosen date.
What are the best extreme day trips from Heathrow Airport?
The most practical destinations usually combine an early departure from Heathrow, a late return flight and a relatively quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Shorter European routes can work particularly well, with cities such as Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels and other well-connected destinations potentially offering useful same-day combinations. Flight times change throughout the year, so search your particular date before deciding where to go.
Can I find city breaks from Heathrow Airport?
Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Heathrow Airport as well as same-day trips. Choose your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, and the Flight Finder will search published schedules for destinations that could fit your trip. Staying for one, two or three nights can open up considerably more destinations and flight combinations.
How long should I have at my destination?
We generally look for at least eight hours between the scheduled arrival and departure flights when searching for a worthwhile day trip. Remember that this isn’t eight hours of sightseeing. You still need to allow time to leave the airport, travel into the city and return in good time for your flight home. For airports some distance from the city centre, the amount of usable time can be considerably shorter.
Which Heathrow terminal does my flight use?
Heathrow Airport has four passenger terminals: Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. Airlines operate from different terminals and arrangements can change, so check the terminal shown on your booking or with your airline before travelling. This is particularly important when arranging parking, drop-off, collection or public transport.
Can I fly from one Heathrow terminal and return to another?
Potentially, yes. Your outbound and return flights may not necessarily use the same terminal, particularly if you are travelling with different airlines. Check both flights before arranging parking, drop-off or collection. Heathrow is a large airport, so returning to a different terminal can affect where you need to travel after landing.
Can I get to Heathrow early enough for an extreme day trip?
Heathrow has excellent public transport connections, including the Elizabeth line, Piccadilly line, Heathrow Express, coaches and buses. However, very early flights can depart before some normal public transport services are running. Check your complete journey to Heathrow before booking an early flight, including which terminal you need to reach.
Can I get home from Heathrow after a late return flight?
Often, but this depends on where you live and what time your flight arrives. Check the last Elizabeth line, Underground, rail, coach or bus service for your route before booking. Remember to allow time after the scheduled landing for taxiing, leaving the aircraft and passing through the airport. If public transport does not work with your return flight, driving, airport parking or staying at a Heathrow hotel may be worth considering.
How early should I arrive at Heathrow Airport?
Allow enough time for check-in if required, security and reaching your departure gate. The time you need will depend on your airline, destination and circumstances, so check the latest advice from Heathrow Airport and your airline before travelling. Heathrow is a large airport and some gates can be a considerable distance from security, so trying to save sightseeing time by arriving unusually late isn’t worth the risk of missing your flight.
How far ahead can I search for day trips from Heathrow Airport?
Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.
Do I need to create an account or log in?
No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Heathrow Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.
Are extreme day trips from Heathrow Airport cheap?
They can be, although Heathrow is not always the obvious choice for the very cheapest fares. Its advantage is the size of its route network and the frequency of flights on many routes, which can create useful same-day combinations. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Heathrow, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there. The cheapest flight does not always produce the cheapest day trip overall.
Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Heathrow Airport?
Not necessarily, but you will need identification that meets your airline’s requirements. Depending on the airline, acceptable photographic identification may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another document accepted by the airline. For international flights, check the passport and entry requirements for your destination before booking.
What happens if there isn’t a suitable return flight on the same day?
Consider turning it into a city break or weekend away. Staying for one or more nights can make many more destinations possible and may provide much better flight times. The Days & Stays Flight Finder can search for both same-day trips and short breaks.
Can I book flights through Days & Stays?
