How to Plan the Perfect Day Trip Abroad

A day trip abroad, often called an extreme day trip, can turn an ordinary day into breakfast in one country, lunch in another, and your own bed again that night.

The idea is simple: take an early flight from the UK, spend the day somewhere different and fly home that evening. But finding a great, extreme day trip takes more than spotting two cheap flights on the same date.

Flight times, airport transfers, border formalities, and the time needed for your return journey can quickly eat into the hours you actually have. Delays and cancellations also matter much more when the entire trip lasts less than a day.

And sometimes, once you’ve looked at the timings properly, staying a little longer makes more sense. The same flights that offer a rushed few hours as a day trip can make a great overnight stay, city break, or 48-hour escape.

This guide explains how to find and plan an extreme day trip, how much time to allow and what to consider before booking. It also covers delays, cancellations, travel insurance, separate flight bookings and passenger rights, as well as when turning your day trip into a short break might be the better option.

Traveller with a backpack at an airport window watching an aircraft at sunrise before an extreme day trip.

What Is an Extreme Day Trip?

An extreme day trip usually means flying abroad and returning to the UK on the same day, without booking overnight accommodation.

No official definition or fixed number of hours makes a trip an “extreme” day trip. In practice, the best options combine an early outbound flight with a sufficiently late return to give you several useful hours at the destination.

For example, a flight arriving at 10 am and another departing at 6 pm might seem like eight hours away, but it doesn’t give you eight hours to explore.

You also need to consider the airport location, immigration, public transport, and the time it takes to get back through the airport. A word of warning: some airports are much farther from the city than their names suggest. Paris Beauvais, for example, is about 75 km from central Paris, and the coach journey typically takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.

On an extreme day trip, long transfers in both directions can dramatically reduce the amount of time you actually have to explore.

Extreme Day Trips at a Glance

    What is it?
Fly from the UK, spend the day abroad and return home the same day.

How much time do you need?
There is no fixed minimum. What matters is the usable time you have after airport procedures and transfers.

    What makes a good trip?
Direct flights, convenient airports, straightforward local transport and enough spare time to enjoy the destination without rushing.

    What can go wrong?
Delays and cancellations can have a much bigger impact on a one-day trip. Always have a plan for disruption and the possibility of an unexpected overnight stay.

    What about separate flights?
If your outbound and return are issued as separate bookings, they may be treated independently. Check the conditions of both tickets and your travel insurance.

What should you check before booking?
Flight dates and times, airport locations, transfers, baggage allowances, identification, passport and entry requirements, insurance and how you’ll get home after your return flight.

    Our tip:
Judge an extreme day trip by the time you’ll actually have at the destination, not simply the gap between the two flights.

Find an Extreme Day Trip or Short Break from Your Airport

Finding two flights on the same day is easy. Finding a combination that leaves enough useful time at the destination is much harder.

Our Days & Stays Trip Finder searches published flight schedules from UK airports and looks for outbound and return combinations based on your chosen date and the minimum amount of time you want away.

Looking for an extreme day trip? Search for flights that give you enough time to explore and return the same day. If you’d rather stay longer, the same finder can search for flight combinations 24, 48 or 72 hours apart, giving you ideas for overnight stays, city breaks and short breaks.

The results, though, are a starting point, not a recommendation to book a particular itinerary. Always check current flight times, availability, fares, airport transfers and entry requirements before booking.

Where could you fly for the day?

Choose your airport and date and we’ll find flights that give you enough time to enjoy the destination and still fly home again.

About our results: Days & Stays is a travel discovery and comparison service, not a travel agent or booking provider. We search published flight information to identify possible trips but do not sell or combine flights, accommodation or other travel services, and we do not take payment. Any booking you choose to make is made directly with the third-party provider and is subject to that provider’s terms. What Makes a Good Extreme Day Trip?

For us, the most important consideration is usable time.

Suppose your outbound flight arrives at 9.30 am and your return departs at 7.30 pm. On paper, that is a ten-hour gap.

But imagine it takes 30 minutes to leave the airport, another 40 minutes to reach the city, 40 minutes to return, and you plan to be back at the airport two hours before departure.

Your ten hours have become approximately six hours and ten minutes.

Depending upon where you are going, that could still make an excellent day trip. The important thing is knowing what you are actually booking.

A good extreme day trip generally combines a direct flight, a conveniently located airport, reliable transport into the destination, and enough spare time that one small delay doesn’t ruin the day.

Where Can You Go on an Extreme Day Trip from the UK?

The best destination isn’t necessarily the one with the shortest flight. For a same-day trip, flight times, airport location, and onward transport can matter much more.

Compact cities with straightforward airport connections are often particularly well suited to extreme day trips. Depending on your departure airport and date, possibilities can include Dublin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Geneva and cities across France, Spain, Italy and elsewhere in Europe.

But we wouldn’t publish a fixed list and suggest that these destinations always work. Flight schedules vary by airport, season and day of the week. A destination that provides ten hours away on a Tuesday might offer no useful same-day combination on Saturday.

That’s where the Days & Stays Trip Finder comes in. Start with the UK airport you want to fly from and your available date, and see which destinations actually work with the published schedules.

How Much Time Do You Need for an Extreme Day Trip?

Traveller leaving a European airport for buses and trains into the city during an extreme day trip.

No single minimum time works for every destination. An eight-hour gap between flights might be plenty for a compact city with a quick airport connection, while a longer gap can still feel rushed if transfers take more time.

The best way to judge a trip is to calculate how much time you will realistically have at the destination.

Worked Example: How Much Time Do You Really Have?

Suppose your flight arrives at 09:00 and your return flight departs at 20:00. At first glance, that looks like an 11-hour day. In reality, your usable time will be considerably shorter.

    Outbound flight arrives 09:00
Allow for leaving the aircraft and the airport 45 mins
Journey into the city 45 mins
    Arrive in city 10:30
    Return flight departs 20:00
Aim to be back at the airport 18:00
Journey back to the airport 45 mins
Allow for transport delays 30 mins
    Leave city 16:45

Usable time in the city: approximately 6 hours 15 minutes.

So an 11-hour gap between flights may give you only a little over six hours to explore. That could still be plenty of time for a great day trip, but it is the six hours, rather than the 11-hour gap between flights, that you should use when deciding whether the trip works for you.

When a Short Break Makes More Sense

Not every same-day flight combination makes a good extreme day trip.

If the airport transfer is long, the return flight leaves early, or you simply don’t have enough usable time to enjoy the destination, staying a night or two can completely change the trip.

That is why Days & Stays isn’t limited to same-day flights. The Trip Finder can also search for flight combinations 24, 48 or 72 hours apart, giving you ideas for overnight stays, city breaks and short breaks.

A destination that gives you only four rushed hours as a day trip might offer a relaxed evening, a full day, and breakfast the following morning as an overnight break. Stretch it to 48 hours and destinations that are difficult to justify for a few hours can become much more worthwhile.

There can be other advantages too. A later outbound flight may be cheaper or easier to reach from home, and an overnight stay removes some of the pressure to squeeze everything into a few hours.

Choose the Airport as Carefully as the Destination

    Airport names can be misleading.

Some airports have fast rail or metro connections straight into the centre. Others serving a well-known destination can be a considerable distance away.

Before choosing a trip, check where the airport actually is, how frequently public transport runs, how long the journey normally takes and what it costs.

Also check the return journey rather than assuming the service that gets you into town will be equally convenient later in the day.

For an extreme day trip, an extra hour spent travelling in each direction can make the difference between a relaxed visit and one that feels rushed. Even on a short break, inconvenient transfers can eat up a surprising chunk of your available time.

👉 Early flight? Compare airport parking and airport hotel options before you book your trip.

    Choosing Your Flights

Direct flights are usually the obvious choice for an extreme day trip.

Connections add time and another chance for disruption, while checked baggage makes little sense for most same-day trips.

Look beyond the headline fare too. Seat or cabin bag charges, airport parking, transfers and food can turn a very cheap flight into a rather less cheap day out.

Frequency is worth considering as well.

A destination served several times each day may provide more alternatives if something goes wrong than a route with only one flight in each direction.

Be particularly careful when booking your flights. It is surprisingly easy to select the right flight on the wrong date, or to miss the fact that a return flight departs the following day rather than the same day. Check the dates, airports, departure and arrival times, and passenger details carefully before you pay, as correcting a mistake afterwards can be costly.

Booking Outbound and Return Flights Separately

    This deserves particular attention.

You might find the best timings by booking the outbound and return separately, perhaps even with different airlines.

That can work perfectly well, but the two bookings are generally treated independently.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority explains that when flights are booked separately, sometimes called a self-transfer, you may not have the same end-to-end statutory protection that can apply when several flights form one booking. Each flight can still have its own applicable passenger rights.

For an extreme day trip, consider the practical consequence.

If your outbound and return flights are issued as two separate one-way bookings, treat them as independent flights, even if you bought them at the same time through the same booking website.

If the outbound flight is cancelled and you can no longer make the trip, you may have no automatic right to a refund for the unused return flight. This is different from a single return ticket, where different rights may apply. Check exactly what you are booking, the fare conditions and your travel insurance cover before you pay.

The same issue can arise on a short break if you have deliberately combined different airlines to get the best departure and return times.

Check the conditions of both bookings and your insurance before travelling.

What If Your Outbound Flight Is Delayed?

Traveller at an airport checking a departures board showing delayed and cancelled evening flights.

This is where extreme day trips differ significantly from conventional holidays.

Losing two hours at the beginning of a week away is frustrating. Losing two hours from a trip that only offered six hours at the destination can fundamentally change whether the journey is worthwhile.

Under UK passenger rights rules (UK261), you may be entitled to assistance if your flight is significantly delayed. Depending on the delay length and flight distance, this can include food and drink, communication, and, if an overnight stay becomes necessary, accommodation and transport to and from it.

You may also be entitled to financial compensation if you arrive at your destination more than three hours late. Compensation is not automatic and generally does not apply where the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances outside the airline’s control, such as severe weather or air traffic control disruption.

The rules depend on the individual circumstances and whether UK261 applies to your flight. You can check the latest guidance on the UK Civil Aviation Authority Website.

But compensation later does not give you those sightseeing hours back.

Before travelling, decide what you would do if the outbound flight were substantially delayed. Would you still go? Is there a point at which the remaining time at the destination simply isn’t worthwhile?

What If Your Outbound Flight Is Cancelled?

For flights covered by UK law, a cancelled flight generally gives you a choice between a refund and alternative travel.

The CAA says that if a cancelled outbound flight is part of a return booking and you choose a refund, you can also receive the cost of the unused return flight. Alternatively, if you still want to travel, the airline must arrange alternative travel under the applicable rules.

Again, separately booked flights need particular care.

If you bought the outbound from one airline and the return separately from another, do not assume cancellation of the first automatically entitles you to a refund from the second.

What If Your Flight Home Is Cancelled?

This is probably the disruption scenario worth thinking about most carefully before an extreme day trip.

If a flight covered by UK passenger rights legislation is cancelled, the airline must provide refunds or alternative travel and, where applicable, care while you wait. This can include food, refreshments and accommodation if an overnight stay becomes necessary.

From our own experience working in aviation, being prepared for an unexpected night stop is a useful mindset for an extreme day trip. During major disruption, you may sometimes need to make your own reasonable arrangements if the airline cannot provide the required care. Keep costs sensible and keep all receipts so you can make a claim afterwards.

Even where reasonable expenses are reimbursed, an unexpected night abroad can be inconvenient. Think about work the following morning, childcare, medication, airport parking and anything else that depends on you returning that evening.

We wouldn’t avoid an extreme day trip because disruption might happen, but we would travel prepared for the possibility that we might not get home that night.

    UK261 and EU261 Passenger Rights

Passenger rights can become complicated surprisingly quickly because the rules that apply depend on where the flight departs, where it arrives, and which airline operates it.

For UK261, the CAA says UK law covers flights departing a UK airport on any airline, arriving in the UK on a UK or EU airline, and arriving in the EU on a UK airline.

EU passenger rights may apply in other circumstances.

Rights can include assistance during qualifying delays, refunds or rerouting following cancellations and, in some cases, financial compensation.

Compensation isn’t always automatic when a flight is delayed or cancelled. Among other things, the cause matters, and compensation may not be payable where disruption resulted from extraordinary circumstances outside the airline’s responsibility, such as severe weather or air traffic control restrictions.

For that reason, we’d always recommend checking the CAA’s current guidance.

If you believe you are entitled to compensation, we’d normally suggest making your first claim directly with the airline. Most airlines have an online claims process, and some, including Ryanair, specifically ask passengers to submit their claim directly in the first instance.

Claims companies such as AirHelp and Compensair can handle a claim on your behalf, usually in return for a percentage of any compensation recovered. They can help if a claim is rejected, disputed, or becomes difficult to pursue, but we’d try the airline ourselves first. If the claim proves straightforward, you could receive the full compensation without paying a claims company fee.

If you do decide to use a claims company, check its fees and terms carefully before instructing it.

Do You Need Travel Insurance for an Extreme Day Trip?

We genuinely wouldn’t travel without it.

Just because you’re only leaving the UK for a few hours doesn’t remove the risk of illness, injury, cancellation, or disruption.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office recommends arranging appropriate travel insurance before travelling abroad and advises travellers to check exactly what their policy covers and excludes.

For an extreme day trip, we’d pay particular attention to cover for disruption, cancellation, medical treatment and additional travel or accommodation costs.

If you book separate flights, check how the insurer treats independently booked travel arrangements, rather than assuming they will be covered as you expect.

A GHIC or valid EHIC can provide access to medically necessary state healthcare in eligible countries, but the government specifically warns that these cards are not substitutes for travel insurance. For example, they do not provide the same protection for private healthcare or repatriation.

Read the policy wording rather than assuming that “Europe” or “annual travel insurance” automatically covers everything about your trip.

For an overnight stay or longer short break, the same principle applies. Make sure the dates and activities are covered for the full trip.

    Finding suitable travel insurance

Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. The right policy depends on your destination, age, medical circumstances, activities, how you’ve booked your flights, and the cancellation and disruption cover you need.

Holiday Extras offers single-trip and annual travel insurance for eligible UK residents. If you’re considering it, check the policy wording, exclusions, excesses, and cover limits carefully, and make sure the policy meets your needs before buying.

👉 Check travel insurance options with Holiday Extras

Check Your Photo ID, Passport and Entry Requirements

Don’t assume that a short trip means you won’t need identification. Even when flying entirely within the UK, airlines require acceptable ID, and the documents they accept can vary. Check your airline’s current ID requirements before travelling.

If you’re travelling outside the UK, don’t assume a one-day trip changes a country’s entry requirements. Check the government’s current travel advice for your destination before booking. Passport validity requirements, visas and other entry arrangements vary by country and can change.

Check current foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

Do this when planning the trip rather than discovering a problem at the departure gate.

What Should You Take on an Extreme Day Trip?

One attraction of an extreme day trip is how liberating it can feel to travel light.

For most trips, we’d take little more than a small day bag with the essentials: passport, phone, charging cable or power bank, any needed medication, payment cards, and anything necessary for the weather.

There is another advantage of travelling light. In our experience, many museums and tourist attractions restrict larger bags or require you to leave them in a locker or cloakroom. Bag rules vary considerably, so if you plan to visit a particular attraction, check its policy before travelling. A small day bag is usually much easier to manage.

It is also sensible to have access to more than one way of paying.

Government travel guidance recommends being prepared for unexpected expenses abroad, especially if a cancelled return flight suddenly turns a day trip into an overnight stay.

Save useful information on your phone, but consider what you would do if you lost, damaged, or ran out of battery.

If you’re using the Trip Finder for an overnight or short break, travelling with cabin baggage can still save considerable time at both ends.

Check the baggage allowance for the airline and fare you actually book, including both the permitted size and weight. Allowances vary by airlines and ticket types, and baggage limits can be strictly enforced. If your bag is too large or heavy, upgrading or checking it at the airport can cost considerably more than arranging baggage in advance.

    Getting to Your UK Airport

An extreme day trip can start very early.

A 6 am flight may mean reaching the airport at 4 am or earlier, when trains and buses might not yet be running.

Check your journey to the departure airport before booking the flight. Airport parking, an overnight airport hotel, a taxi or public transport can materially change both the cost and practicality of the trip.

The same applies at the end of the day. A bargain return flight arriving at 11.45 pm is less attractive if the final train home departed half an hour earlier.

The same applies to short breaks. Staying abroad for two nights doesn’t help much if you need an expensive taxi at 3 am to get to your UK departure airport.

Our individual airport guides include practical information for getting to the airport and planning your trip.

    Don’t Try to See Everything

Traveller enjoying an evening café overlooking a Christmas market during a European extreme day trip.

A successful extreme day trip doesn’t need a minute-by-minute itinerary. We’d usually do the opposite.

Choose one or two things you really want to see, plan how you’ll get between them, and leave some spare time. Sites such as GetYourGuide, Viator and Tripadvisor can help you research attractions, tours and things to do before you travel, especially when you only have a few hours at your destination.

Racing between six attractions isn’t necessarily better than exploring one neighbourhood, having a good lunch and enjoying being somewhere different. The aim is to enjoy the time you have, not simply see how much you can fit into it.

The same applies to a 24- or 48-hour city break: more time doesn’t mean you need to fill every hour.

Before Booking: Extreme Day Trip Checklist

Before paying for an extreme day trip, we’d check:

    ✓ Usable time
How many hours will you genuinely have after airport procedures and transfers?
    ✓ Airport transfer
How long does it take to reach where you actually want to visit?
    ✓ Return journey
What time do you realistically need to leave for the airport?
    ✓ Flight frequency
Is there another flight home if something changes?
    ✓ Separate bookings
Are the outbound and return flights issued as independent tickets?
    ✓ Booking details
Have you checked the dates, airports and flight times carefully, including that the return really is on the same day?
    ✓ Disruption
What would you do if the outbound flight were significantly delayed or cancelled?
    ✓ Unexpected overnight stay
Could you cope practically and financially if you didn’t get home that evening?
    ✓ Travel insurance
Does the policy cover the trip and the risks that matter to you?
    ✓ Identification & entry requirements
Do you have the identification required by your airline and, for international trips, a valid passport and any necessary entry documents?
    ✓ Baggage
Does your bag meet the size and weight allowance included with the fare you’ve booked?
    ✓ Getting home
Will trains, buses or other transport still be running when your return flight lands in the UK?

One final check: Before you pay, go through the booking from the beginning once more. Check the date, departure airport, destination airport, flight times, identification or passport requirements and baggage allowance. A few minutes now could prevent an expensive mistake later.

Find Your Next Day Trip or Short Break

Whether you’re looking for an extreme day trip, an overnight escape, or a few days away, the Days & Stays Trip Finder searches published flight schedules from UK airports to find combinations that fit your time.

Choose your departure airport and date, then select the minimum time you want away. You can look for a same-day adventure or explore possibilities for 24-, 48-, 72-, or 96-hour short breaks and city breaks.

Sometimes the best option is breakfast at the airport and home again that night. Sometimes it’s an overnight stay or a couple of nights exploring somewhere new.

The idea behind Days & Stays is simple: start with the time you have available and discover where you can go.

    Extreme Day Trip FAQs

Answers to common questions about extreme day trips from the UK, finding suitable flights, choosing airports and planning how much time you really need at your destination.

Are extreme day trips worth it?

They can be. An extreme day trip can give you several hours somewhere new without paying for a hotel or using several days of annual leave. But a cheap return flight isn’t automatically a good day trip. Airport transfers, usable time, local transport and the possibility of disruption all matter. We’d choose an extreme day trip based on the time it gives us at the destination, not simply the fare.

How do extreme day trips work?

An extreme day trip usually involves taking an early flight from the UK, spending the day at the destination and returning on a later flight the same day. The challenge is finding outbound and return flights that leave enough usable time after allowing for airport procedures, immigration and transfers into and out of the destination.

Where can you go on an extreme day trip from the UK?

It depends on your departure airport, travel date and the seasonal flight schedule. European cities with direct flights and straightforward airport connections often work particularly well. Depending on the airport and date, possibilities can include Dublin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Geneva, as well as cities across France, Spain, Italy and elsewhere in Europe. Always check the flights available on the day you actually want to travel.

Which UK airports are best for extreme day trips?

Airports with a wide choice of early outbound and late return flights generally offer the most possibilities. Major airports such as London Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and Liverpool can offer useful options, but smaller airports can work well too. What matters is the timetable on your chosen date rather than simply the size of the airport.

How do you find cheap flights for an extreme day trip?

Start by looking for destinations with an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return on the same day. Then compare fares for different dates if you can be flexible. Don’t judge the trip on flight price alone: baggage charges, airport parking, airport transfers and local transport all contribute to the real cost of an extreme day trip.

How many hours do you need for an extreme day trip?

There is no universal minimum. An eight-hour gap between flights can work well if the airport is close to the destination, while a longer gap may still feel rushed if transfers take a long time. Start with the time between scheduled arrival and departure, then subtract the time needed to leave the airport, travel to and from the place you’re visiting and return in good time for your flight home. What remains is your realistic sightseeing time.

Do you need travel insurance for an extreme day trip?

We would travel with appropriate travel insurance even for a same-day trip abroad. Being away for only a few hours doesn’t remove the risk of illness, cancellation or disruption. Check that your policy covers the destination and the things that matter to your trip, particularly medical treatment, cancellation, disruption and additional travel or accommodation costs.

    Direct Flights from Manchester Airport

The table below shows destinations served by direct flights from Manchester Airport. Routes and frequencies can vary by season, so use the Days & Stays Flight Finder above to check which destinations suit your travel dates.

Some destinations work well as extreme day trips with the right flight times, while others suit a weekend or longer short break.

Where Can You Go for a Day Trip from Manchester Airport?

The answer depends on the flight schedule. A destination that works perfectly for an extreme day trip on one date may have no suitable same-day return on another.

Dublin, Belfast and Amsterdam are obvious places to start, particularly where there are several flights a day. But Manchester’s extensive European network means it is worth looking further afield too. With an early departure and a late flight home, cities across Europe can potentially become realistic day trips.

Manchester also has a much larger long-haul network, but those destinations are generally better suited to longer stays rather than the day trips and short breaks covered here.

Flight time is only part of the equation. Airport transfers matter too, so Days & Stays looks for flight combinations, while our destination guides help you work out how much useful time you’ll have on arrival.

City Breaks & Weekend Breaks from Manchester Airport

If the flight times aren’t right for a day trip, city breaks and short breaks from Manchester Airport open up many more possibilities, particularly if you can stay for one or two nights.

Cities such as Barcelona, Rome, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Copenhagen, Lisbon and Berlin are great choices for a city break or long weekend from Manchester, with plenty more destinations across Europe to choose from.

Manchester also offers direct long-haul flights to North America, the Middle East, Asia, and beyond, opening up many more possibilities for longer breaks and holidays.

The Days & Stays Flight Finder searches published flight schedules for same-day trips and short breaks, helping you discover where you can go with the time you have.

Our destination guides include airport transfers and what you can realistically do once you arrive.

Where Are the Cheapest Flights from Manchester?

No single destination is always cheapest. Fares vary by date, demand, and how far ahead you book.

Rather than choosing somewhere because it is normally considered cheap, compare the total cost of the trip, including travel to Manchester Airport, destination transfers, accommodation if required and anything you want to do while you’re there.

    Beach, Sunshine or Something Different?

Manchester isn’t limited to city breaks. Direct flights serve a wide range of holiday destinations across Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Italy, and the Canary Islands, as well as further afield destinations including Marrakech, Tromsø, Dubrovnik, and Cape Verde.

Some routes are seasonal, and others operate only on certain days of the week.

Days & Stays searches all available published schedules, helping you discover seasonal routes and possibilities for both day trips and short breaks.

    Not Sure Where to Go?

That’s exactly what the Days & Stays Flight Finder is designed for.

    About Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport (MAN) is around nine miles south of Manchester city centre and is one of the UK’s busiest airports. Its extensive domestic, European and long-haul network makes it particularly useful for travellers from across Greater Manchester and the wider North West, as well as parts of Yorkshire, the Midlands and North Wales.

Manchester Airport has two passenger terminals, so check which terminal your flight uses before you travel. Manchester Airport has its own railway station, with direct train services from Manchester city centre and connections from destinations across the North of England.

For an extreme day trip, we recommend planning your travel to and from Manchester Airport before booking your flights. Some of the most useful same-day combinations leave Manchester early in the morning or arrive back late at night, when public transport options may be more limited.

    Getting to Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport is well connected by train, tram, bus, coach and road. Its railway station is within the airport complex, making public transport particularly useful for day trips and short breaks. However, if you are planning a same-day trip, check both directions before booking, especially if your flight leaves early or arrives back late.

Driving and Parking at Manchester Airport

Driving can be convenient for early departures, late returns or when travelling with others.

Manchester Airport has several parking options, including car parks close to the terminals, Meet & Greet and park-and-ride facilities. Pre-booking can be considerably cheaper than paying on the day, so it is worth comparing options before you travel.

Bus and Coach to Manchester Airport

Local and regional bus services serve Manchester Airport, with the main bus stops at The Station, the airport’s transport interchange.

Services connect the airport with Manchester and surrounding areas, including Stockport, Altrincham and other parts of Greater Manchester. Longer-distance coach services, including National Express, connect Manchester Airport with destinations across the UK.

If you are travelling for a day trip or catching an early flight, check the first and last services carefully, especially on weekends and public holidays.

👉 Check bus and coach travel on the Manchester Airport website

Getting to Manchester Airport by Train

Manchester Airport has its own railway station at The Station, the airport’s main transport interchange, which is connected to the passenger terminals.

Direct trains run between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport, with journey times typically around 15 to 20 minutes. Direct rail services also connect the airport with several towns and cities across the North of England.

For early departures or late returns, check the first and last trains before booking your flights, especially if you are planning an extreme day trip.

👉 Compare trains to Manchester Airport

For very early flights, the first train of the morning may not get you to Manchester Airport in time, so check the complete journey before booking your flight.

    Manchester Airport Hotels

If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near the airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.

Manchester Airport has several hotels within or close to the airport complex, including the Radisson Blu, which connects to the terminals via the covered Skylink walkway. Other nearby options include Clayton Hotel Manchester Airport, Crowne Plaza Manchester Airport and Holiday Inn Manchester Airport.

It is worth comparing a hotel and parking package with booking both separately, especially if you would otherwise have a long drive to Manchester in the early hours.

    Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up

Manchester Airport has designated drop-off and pick-up areas for Terminals 2 and 3, but the arrangements are different depending on whether you are dropping someone off or collecting them.

For the quickest drop-off, you can use the terminal drop-off areas. Current charges start at £5.50 for up to five minutes or £6.50 for up to ten minutes, with a maximum stay of 30 minutes. These areas use a barrierless payment system, so you need to pay online or by phone by midnight the following day. You can also set up AutoPay if you use the airport regularly.

JetParks 1 also offers a free drop-off area, where you can stay for up to 60 minutes. A free shuttle bus runs 24 hours a day from here to the terminals, with the journey taking around six minutes. The shuttle is one-way, from the free drop-off area to the terminals, so you can’t use this facility to collect arriving passengers.

If you’re picking someone up, use the designated pick-up area for their terminal rather than the drop-off forecourt. At Terminal 2, the Express Pick Up Zone has a maximum stay of 15 minutes. If you need longer, or want to go inside the terminal to meet someone, use the appropriate short-stay or multi-storey car park instead.

Days & Stays tip: For an extreme day trip, the free JetParks 1 drop-off can make sense if someone is taking you to the airport. Allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes for the transfer rather than paying to be dropped directly outside the terminal.

Don’t stop on the airport approach roads or use a drop-off area for collecting passengers. The airport monitors these areas, and substantial parking charges may apply if you don’t follow the rules.

👉 Check current Manchester Airport drop-off and pick-up charges and directions.

Planning Your Trip from Manchester Airport

Illustration of planning an extreme day trip from Manchester Airport with flights, transfers, travel documents and timings.

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture. Also consider how you’ll get to Manchester Airport, how quickly you can reach your destination after landing, and how much time you’ll realistically have before your return flight.

How Much Time Will You Really Have?

Days & Stays shows the scheduled time between your arrival and return flights, but that isn’t the same as sightseeing time.

Allow plenty of time to leave the airport, travel into the city, and return with time to make your flight home. Ten hours between flights with a 15-minute airport transfer could give you more useful time than 12 hours with a lengthy journey into the city.

Our destination guides include airport transfer information to help you work out how much time you’ll actually have.

    Travel Light

For a day trip, a small under-seat bag may be all you need. Travelling without checked luggage saves time and avoids waiting at baggage reclaim.

Check the cabin baggage allowance included with your fare before travelling.

    Check Your Travel Documents

You’ll need suitable identification, including on domestic flights. Depending on your airline, this may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another accepted form of photographic ID.

For international trips, check your destination’s passport, visa and travel authorisation requirements before booking.

    Allow for Things Going Wrong

Delays matter more when you only have a day, and a cancellation could leave you needing an unexpected overnight stay.

Check whether your flights are on the same or separate bookings, consider appropriate travel insurance, and plan for disruption.

More help: Read our guide to planning an extreme day trip, including delays, cancellations, travel insurance, separate flight bookings and passenger rights.

Our destination guides focus on places you can realistically visit in the time you have.

Turn Your Day Trip into a Short Break

If the flight times aren’t quite right for a day trip, staying for one or two nights can open up many more possibilities and give you more time to explore.

    👉 Find accommodation with Booking.com

Days & Stays covers both same-day trips and short breaks, so don’t rule out a destination just because the flights don’t work in a single day.

    Getting Around When You Arrive

Check how you’ll get from the airport to where you actually want to go. Some airports have fast rail or metro connections, while others require a longer bus, coach or transfer.

Our destination guides include airport transfer information where useful, helping you judge how practical a destination is for a day trip.

Extreme Day Trips from Manchester Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Manchester Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from Manchester Airport?

Yes. Manchester Airport’s extensive European network means a number of destinations can be possible as same-day trips when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Manchester Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Shorter routes such as Dublin, Belfast and Amsterdam are obvious places to look, while cities further across Europe can become possible when the flight times work. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations are possible on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from Manchester Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early flight from Manchester, a late return flight and a quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Manchester has a particularly wide choice of European routes, but flight times and frequencies change throughout the year, so a destination that makes an excellent day trip on one date may offer very little time on another.

Can I find city breaks from Manchester Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Manchester Airport as well as same-day trips. Choose your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, and the Flight Finder will search published schedules for destinations that could fit your trip.

How long should I have at my destination?

We generally look for at least eight hours between the scheduled arrival and departure flights when searching for a worthwhile day trip. Remember that this isn’t eight hours of sightseeing. You still need to allow time to leave the airport, travel into the city and return in good time for your flight home.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Manchester Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Manchester Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Manchester Airport cheap?

They can be. Manchester is served by several low-cost airlines and inexpensive fares can sometimes be found, particularly if you are flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Manchester Airport, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Manchester?

Not necessarily, but you will need identification that meets your airline’s requirements. Depending on the airline, acceptable photographic identification may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another document accepted by the airline. For international flights, check the passport and entry requirements for your destination before booking.

What happens if there isn’t a suitable return flight on the same day?

Consider turning it into a city break or weekend away. Staying overnight can make many more destinations possible and may provide better flight times. The Days & Stays Flight Finder can search for both same-day trips and short breaks.

Does Manchester Airport have long-haul flights?

Yes. Manchester has an extensive long-haul network as well as domestic and European flights, with direct services to destinations in North America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Asia and elsewhere. These routes are generally better suited to longer stays rather than the extreme day trips and short breaks featured in the Flight Finder.

Can I book flights through Days & Stays?

Days & Stays is a travel discovery service, not an airline, travel agent or booking provider. We search published flight schedules to help you identify possible trips and may provide links to third-party booking providers where you can check current fares and availability. Use the Days & Stays Flight Finder above to check the options for your travel date.

The answer changes with the flight schedule. A destination that’s perfect for an extreme day trip on one date may have no suitable same-day return on another.

Flight time is only part of the equation. Airport transfers matter too, so Days & Stays looks for flight combinations, while our destination guides help you work out how much useful time you’ll have when you get there.

Where Are the Cheapest Flights from Birmingham?

No single destination is always cheapest. Fares vary by date, demand and how far ahead you book.

Instead of choosing somewhere because it is normally considered cheap, compare the total cost of the trip, including travel to Birmingham Airport, destination transfers, accommodation (if required), and anything you want to do while you’re there.

    Beach, Sunshine or Something Different?

Best European Christmas Markets for 2026

    Cologne Christmas Market Day Trip

Cologne Christmas Market with Cologne Cathedral illuminated at dusk

Cologne is particularly well suited to a Christmas market day trip from the UK, largely because getting from the airport to the centre is straightforward.

Trains connect Cologne Bonn Airport with Köln Hauptbahnhof, immediately beside Cologne Cathedral. Step outside the station and you are already within walking distance of several Christmas markets.

Rather than one single event, Cologne has markets spread around the centre, including the famous market beside the cathedral, the Market of Hearts and themed markets elsewhere in the city. Cologne Tourism says the city’s 2026 markets begin opening from around mid-November.

That concentration of markets makes Cologne particularly attractive for a short visit. You don’t need to spend much of the day travelling across the city.

    Airport: Cologne Bonn (CGN)
Best for: Easy airport transfer and several markets
Stay overnight? Worth considering if you want to enjoy the markets after dark.

    Prague Christmas Market Day Trip

Prague Christmas Market in Old Town Square with illuminated Church of Our Lady before Týn, festive stalls and Christmas tree at dusk

Prague is one of Europe’s most popular Christmas market destinations and has enough to fill much more than a day, but an extreme day trip is possible if the flight times work out.

The main Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square Christmas markets run from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Prague City Tourism also lists earlier markets at Náměstí Míru from 20 November and Náměstí Republiky from 25 November.

Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square are within easy walking distance, making them particularly practical for a short visit.

The bigger consideration is the journey between Václav Havel Airport and central Prague. We would therefore look for a genuinely long window between flights rather than trying to make the trip with the minimum possible time.

    Airport: Prague (PRG)
Main markets: Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square
    2026 dates: 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027
Best for: Christmas atmosphere and a beautiful historic centre
Stay overnight? Recommended if the return flight limits your evening.

    Vienna Christmas Market Day Trip

Vienna Christmas Market at Rathausplatz with illuminated City Hall, festive stalls and Christmas tree at dusk

Few cities offer as much Christmas market choice as Vienna.

The Viennese Christmas Market at Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026, while other markets are held around the city, including at Schönbrunn Palace, Stephansplatz, Spittelberg, Karlsplatz and Belvedere.

Rathausplatz itself is a major event, with festive stalls, Christmas decorations, food and drink, alongside seasonal attractions in City Hall Park.

Vienna Airport has good public transport connections into the city, but we would resist trying to visit every famous market in one day.

Rathausplatz combined with one or two central markets would make a much more realistic itinerary and leave time to enjoy Vienna rather than simply travelling between markets.

    Airport: Vienna (VIE)
    Main market: Rathausplatz
    2026 dates: 13 November to 26 December
Best for: Choice of markets and spectacular surroundings
Stay overnight? Very tempting. Vienna easily warrants a weekend.

    Kraków Christmas Market Day Trip

Kraków Christmas Market in Rynek Główny with St Mary’s Basilica, the Cloth Hall, festive stalls and Christmas tree at dusk

Kraków’s main Christmas market takes place on Rynek Główny, the enormous Main Market Square at the heart of the Old Town.

The 2026/27 market is currently planned to run from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, although Visit Kraków notes that the city will confirm final dates closer to the event.

The location makes Kraków particularly appealing for a short visit. St Mary’s Basilica, the Cloth Hall, and many of the city’s historic streets are around the same square, so you won’t need to spend precious time travelling between attractions.

Smaller festive markets also take place elsewhere in the city.

    Airport: Kraków (KRK)
    Main market: Rynek Główny
    Planned dates: 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027
Best for: Historic setting, Polish food and a compact Old Town
Stay overnight? Often an excellent value option.

    Brussels Christmas Market Day Trip

Brussels Christmas market at Grand-Place with illuminated Town Hall, festive stalls and Christmas tree at dusk

Brussels is one of the easiest European Christmas market destinations to reach from the UK, with both direct flights and Eurostar services from London.

Winter Wonders runs from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, spreading through central Brussels from Grand-Place towards Sainte-Catherine and the Marché aux Poissons.

The event includes more than 200 chalets, a Ferris wheel, an ice rink, and other attractions, along with the Christmas tree and a sound-and-light show at Grand-Place.

Brussels Airport has direct rail connections into the centre, while Eurostar provides another attractive option from London.

Winter Wonders’ central location means you won’t need complicated sightseeing once you arrive. You can simply explore the event and historic centre on foot.

    Airport: Brussels (BRU)
    2026 dates: 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027
Best for: Easy access, Eurostar and a large central market
Stay overnight? Particularly useful if you also want to visit Bruges.

    Official information: City of Brussels

    Berlin Christmas Market Day Trip

Berlin Christmas Market with Rotes Rathaus, Fernsehturm, Ferris wheel and festive stalls at dusk

Berlin is less about one definitive Christmas market and more about choosing from numerous markets across the city.

The Alexanderplatz Christmas Market runs from 23 November to 26 December 2026, while Berliner Weihnachtszeit at the Rotes Rathaus continues from 23 November until 3 January 2027. WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt runs from 23 November to 31 December.

Berlin’s size is the main factor to consider for a day trip. Trying to cross the city repeatedly to visit every famous market would quickly eat up your time.

Instead, choose an area and combine two or three nearby attractions. Alexanderplatz and the Rotes Rathaus make a particularly straightforward central pairing.

    Airport: Berlin Brandenburg (BER)
    Main season: Late November onwards
Best for: Variety and combining markets with sightseeing
Stay overnight? Recommended if you want to explore several markets.

    Budapest Christmas Market Day Trip

Budapest Christmas market beside the Danube with the Hungarian Parliament Building, Chain Bridge and festive stalls illuminated at dusk

Budapest’s Advent Basilica runs from 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 on Szent István Square in front of St Stephen’s Basilica.

The market features almost 100 craft exhibitors, seasonal food, a large Christmas tree, and light displays projected onto the basilica. The central location makes it easy to combine it with a walk to the Danube and some of Budapest’s best-known central sights.

Budapest Airport is farther from the centre than airports such as Geneva or Amsterdam, so transfer time matters when planning a same-day trip.

With a long enough flight window, it’s doable, but adding a night gives you more time to enjoy the lights and the evening atmosphere.

    Airport: Budapest (BUD)
    Main market: Advent Basilica
    2026 dates: 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027
Best for: Food, architecture and Christmas atmosphere
Stay overnight? We’d seriously consider it.

    Official information: Advent Basilica

    Amsterdam Christmas Market Day Trip

Amsterdam Christmas market beside a canal with festive stalls, Christmas tree and illuminated historic buildings at dusk

Amsterdam is one of the easiest European cities to reach from many UK airports, but its main Christmas market has a relatively short season.

Christmas Village Amsterdam at Museumplein runs from 3 to 27 December 2026, with more than 50 stalls selling food, drinks and gifts. Entry to the market is free.

Schiphol is exceptionally well connected to Amsterdam, with frequent trains into the city. You can then reach Museumplein easily by public transport.

That combination makes Amsterdam a good choice for an extreme Christmas market day trip when the market is operating.

It also shows why checking dates matters. A November flight to Amsterdam could make an excellent city day trip, but it would be too early for the Christmas Village.

    Airport: Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS)
    Main market: Christmas Village, Museumplein
    2026 dates: 3 to 27 December
Best for: Excellent UK connections and easy airport access
Stay overnight? Optional if the flight times are good.

    Strasbourg Christmas Market Day Trip

Strasbourg Christmas Market with Strasbourg Cathedral, festive stalls, Christmas tree and historic buildings illuminated at dusk

Strasbourg’s reputation as the Capital of Christmas makes it one of Europe’s most exciting festive destinations.

The official Strasbourg Christmas website confirms that the 2026 season begins on 27 November, with markets, illuminations and events spread across the historic centre.

The challenge from the UK is getting there efficiently. Strasbourg Airport has fewer UK connections than major hubs such as Amsterdam or Berlin, so the best journey may involve rail or another airport.

Once there, the historic Grande Île is compact and particularly well suited to exploring on foot.

For Strasbourg, we would let the transport options determine whether it is better suited to an extreme day trip or a short break.

Airport: Strasbourg (SXB), or alternative rail connections
    2026 opening: 27 November
Best for: A dedicated Christmas market trip
Stay overnight? We’d favour at least one night.

Copenhagen suits a short visit because the airport has excellent rail connections and the centre is relatively compact.

Christmas in Tivoli runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Unlike many city Christmas markets, Tivoli requires admission, but it combines festive decorations, seasonal entertainment, food and attractions within the famous gardens.

Tivoli sits directly opposite Copenhagen Central Station, so the train journey from the airport leaves you very close to the main attraction. You can also fit in Nyhavn and Copenhagen’s pedestrianised centre without travelling far.

The market is usually open from 11 am to 8.30 pm, but closes earlier on the final day.

Basel is especially good for a short trip because EuroAirport is close to the city, and public transport into the centre is straightforward.

Geneva’s Noël au Quai runs from 19 November to 24 December 2026 at Quai du Mont-Blanc.

The location beside Lake Geneva provides a very different setting from the medieval squares associated with many European Christmas markets.

Geneva Airport is also particularly convenient for a short visit. Rail connections make the journey into central Geneva very quick, so you lose less of a limited day getting to and from the airport.

The Munich Christkindlmarkt runs from 20 November to 24 December 2026 around Marienplatz and Rindermarkt. The City of Munich says the municipal market will have more than 130 stalls.

Its central location is ideal once you reach Munich, but the airport is some distance from the city centre.

A long flight window could still make a day trip possible, though Munich is one destination we’d be particularly tempted to add a night to.

Around 180 traditional red-and-white stalls sell Christmas decorations, food, and gifts. The market normally opens at 10 am but closes at 2 pm on Christmas Eve.

Once you reach Nuremberg, the Old Town is great to explore on foot. UK flight availability is the bigger consideration, so it’s worth researching rather than assuming a day trip is possible.

The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt runs from 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 around Domplatz and Residenzplatz.

Its location in Salzburg’s historic centre makes it one of the most attractive markets on our list, and it stays open beyond Christmas into New Year.

Direct UK flights can be seasonal, so we’d check the schedules first rather than assuming a same-day trip will be available.

If the flights aren’t right, Salzburg’s compact centre makes it particularly attractive for a one- or two-night Christmas break.

The market is open every day during the season, normally from 10 am until 8 pm, with hot drinks served later.

Tallinn’s Old Town is compact enough to explore mostly on foot, making the most of a short visit. The longer flight from the UK means the schedule remains the deciding factor.

The market combines Latvian food, crafts, gifts and seasonal entertainment in the historic centre. Riga’s compact Old Town also lets you explore much of the centre on foot.

As with Tallinn, the distance from the UK makes the flight times particularly important for a same-day trip.

    What About Bruges Christmas Market?

Bruges Christmas Market in Markt Square with festive stalls, Christmas tree, historic guild houses and the Belfry illuminated at dusk

Bruges deserves a place in this guide, even though it doesn’t have its own major commercial airport.

One option is to travel to Brussels, then take a train to Bruges. From London, take the Eurostar to Brussels, then catch an onward Belgian train.

For a pure same-day trip, Brussels is considerably easier. But if Bruges is the Christmas market you really want to experience, adding a night can make far more sense than forcing the journey into a very long day.

This shows why headline flight or train times don’t tell the whole story. What matters is the full journey from your departure point to the Christmas market and back.

Christmas Market Day Trips by Train

Eurostar train beside a festive Christmas market with travellers and signs for Brussels, Lille, Paris and Amsterdam

Flying isn’t always the quickest or easiest way to reach a European Christmas market.

From London, international rail services make Brussels, Lille, Paris and Amsterdam realistic alternatives to flying. You can reach Bruges with a change in Brussels, while destinations farther into Europe may be reachable with additional high-speed rail connections.

Rail has one major advantage for a short trip: you usually arrive in or near the city centre.

For travellers outside London, however, a direct flight from a regional airport may be considerably easier than travelling across the UK to catch Eurostar.

We compare the full journey rather than assuming flying or rail is automatically quicker.

Christmas Market Day Trip or Short Break?

`Couple overlooking a European Christmas market at dusk with festive stalls, Christmas lights and historic city buildings`

An extreme day trip can be great fun, but it isn’t automatically the best way to visit every Christmas market.

An early outbound flight and late return can make for an excellent day in Cologne or Amsterdam. Move the return flight several hours earlier and the same destination becomes far less attractive.

That’s why the Days & Stays finder lets you change the minimum amount of time at your destination.

If the flights aren’t suitable for a day trip, try increasing the minimum stay to 24 or 48 hours. A one- or two-night Christmas market break gives you more choice and time to enjoy the destination.

One night opens up many more flight combinations and lets you enjoy the Christmas lights and evening atmosphere without spending the entire day checking the time.

It can make destinations such as Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Tallinn and Salzburg particularly interesting.

How to Plan a European Christmas Market Day Trip

Illustration of planning an extreme day trip with flights, transfers, travel documents and timings.

Start with the available flights, then choose a market that fits the schedule.

Allow time to get from the airport into the city, and remember you need enough time to return for security and boarding. Eight hours between flights does not mean eight hours at the Christmas market.

Travelling with only hand luggage can make a short trip much easier, but choose your baggage allowance carefully. You may well return with more than you took if you buy gifts or Christmas market treats.

Check passport and entry requirements before travelling and make sure you have suitable travel insurance. Winter weather can disrupt flights and rail services, so it is also worth considering what you would do if your return journey were cancelled.

Most importantly, check the official website of the particular Christmas market shortly before booking and again before travelling. Dates, opening hours and individual events can change.

Things to Do on a European Christmas Market Trip

Things to Do During Your Christmas Market Trip

The Christmas market might be the main reason for travelling, but many of these destinations have enough to fill the rest of the day.

A canal cruise in Amsterdam, river cruise in Budapest, walking tour in Prague or museum visit in Berlin can make good use of a few spare hours.

For an extreme day trip, we'd favour attractions that can be booked for a specific time and are reasonably close to the Christmas market or your route back to the airport.

    European Christmas Markets 2026 FAQs

Can you visit a European Christmas market in one day from the UK?

Yes. Some European cities can be visited on a same-day return flight from the UK, particularly when there is an early outbound flight, late return and quick transfer between the airport and city centre. The Days & Stays Christmas Market Finder searches published schedules for possible combinations.

Where is the best Christmas market in Europe in 2026?

There is no single best Christmas market in Europe, but Cologne, Vienna, Prague and Strasbourg are among our favourite choices for 2026. Cologne is particularly good for a short trip because several markets are concentrated around the city centre, Vienna offers an exceptional choice of markets, Prague combines Christmas atmosphere with a beautiful historic centre, and Strasbourg is one of Europe’s best-known dedicated Christmas market destinations.

What is the easiest Christmas market to get to from the UK?

There isn’t one answer for every UK departure point. Cologne, Brussels and Amsterdam can be particularly convenient because of their transport connections between the airport or station and the city centre. Travellers from London also have international rail options. We would compare the complete journey rather than flight time alone.

Which European Christmas markets are close to an airport?

Geneva has an exceptionally quick connection between its airport and city centre. Amsterdam, Basel and Cologne also have convenient public transport connections, making them particularly interesting for a short Christmas market trip.

Can you visit Cologne Christmas Market in one day?

Potentially, yes. Cologne is particularly well suited to a day trip because trains connect Cologne Bonn Airport with the main station beside Cologne Cathedral, with several Christmas markets within walking distance.

Can you visit Prague Christmas Market in one day?

Yes, when flight times allow. However, enough time needs to be allowed for travelling between Prague Airport and the centre. Prague is also particularly well suited to an overnight Christmas market break.

Can you visit Christmas markets by Eurostar?

Yes. Brussels, Lille, Paris and Amsterdam can be reached from London by international rail, while Bruges can be reached with an onward connection in Brussels.

Is Bruges possible as a Christmas market day trip from the UK?

It can be, particularly from London, but Bruges requires an onward rail journey. Brussels is easier for a pure day trip, while an overnight stay makes Bruges considerably more relaxed.

How long do you need at a Christmas market?

Two or three hours may be enough to explore one market, while cities such as Vienna, Berlin and Cologne have several markets worth visiting. For an extreme day trip, we’d prefer a substantial margin between flights rather than choosing the shortest theoretically possible visit.

When do European Christmas markets open in 2026?

Dates vary considerably. Some begin in mid-November, while others don’t open until late November or December. The Days & Stays finder uses selected published market dates, but always check the organiser’s website before booking.

Are Christmas markets open every day?

Not necessarily. Opening days and hours vary, and Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve often have special arrangements. Always check the individual market you intend to visit.

Are there any European Christmas market tours available in 2026?

Yes. European Christmas market trips can be organised independently using flights or rail, while organised tours, coach trips and city breaks are also available for some destinations. If travelling independently, our Days & Stays Christmas Market Finder can help identify possible day trips and short breaks from UK airports using published flight schedules. Always check current availability, dates and what is included before booking a tour or package.

What are the top 10 most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe?

For beautiful settings and Christmas atmosphere, our 2026 shortlist would include Prague, Strasbourg, Vienna, Salzburg, Cologne, Nuremberg, Tallinn, Kraków, Copenhagen and Basel. They range from medieval Old Town squares in Prague and Tallinn to Vienna’s grand city-centre settings and Strasbourg’s famous festive streets. The best choice will depend on the atmosphere you want, your departure point and whether you are planning a day trip or short break.

Could you visit in a day? Potentially. The deciding factor is the schedule rather than the distance alone. Use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to check outbound and return flights for your chosen date.

Where Can You Go for a Day Trip from Newquay Airport?

The answer changes with the flight schedule. A destination that’s perfect for an extreme day trip on one date may have no suitable same-day return on another.

Dublin, London, and Manchester are obvious places to look, but Newquay’s relatively small flight schedule means timing matters. Some routes are also seasonal or operate only on certain days of the week.

Flight time is only part of the equation. Airport transfers matter too, so Days & Stays looks for flight combinations, while our destination guides help you work out how much useful time you’ll have on arrival.

City Breaks & Weekend Breaks from Newquay Airport

If the flight times aren’t right for a day trip, city breaks and short breaks from Newquay Airport open up many more possibilities, particularly if you can stay for one or two nights.

Dublin, Edinburgh, Belfast and London are natural choices for a city break or weekend away, while seasonal international routes such as Alicante, Málaga, Faro, Düsseldorf and Zürich open up possibilities further afield.

The Days & Stays Flight Finder searches published flight schedules for both same-day trips and short breaks, helping you discover where you could go with the time you have available.

Our destination guides include airport transfers and what you can realistically do once you arrive.

Where Are the Cheapest Flights from Newquay?

No single destination is always cheapest. Fares vary by date, demand, and how far ahead you book.

Rather than choosing somewhere because it is normally considered cheap, compare the total cost of the trip, including travel to Newquay Airport, destination transfers, accommodation if required and anything you want to do while you’re there.

    Beach, Sunshine or Something Different?

Newquay isn’t limited to city breaks. Direct flights also serve holiday destinations in Spain and Portugal, including Alicante, Málaga, and Faro, while seasonal routes add more options for a short break or longer stay.

    About Newquay Airport

Newquay Airport terminal with passengers, cars and an aircraft taking off above the Cornish coast.
Illustration of Newquay Airport for Days & Stays.

Newquay Airport (NQY) is on Cornwall’s north coast, about five miles northeast of Newquay town centre. It is Cornwall’s main commercial airport and is particularly handy for travellers from Newquay, Truro, Padstow, Wadebridge, St Austell and other parts of Cornwall.

The airport has a single passenger terminal, so getting around is relatively straightforward. However, Newquay Airport does not have its own railway station, something worth considering when planning an early departure or late return.

For an extreme day trip, we recommend planning your travel to and from Newquay Airport before booking your flights. Some of the most useful same-day combinations leave Newquay early in the morning or arrive back late at night, when public transport options may be more limited.

    Getting to Newquay Airport

Driving and Parking at Newquay Airport

Driving can be particularly convenient for early departures, especially if you are travelling from elsewhere in Cornwall.

Newquay Airport has on-site parking within easy reach of the terminal. Pre-booking can save money compared with paying on the day, so check the latest options and prices before you travel.

👉 Compare Newquay Airport parking with Holiday Extras

    Bus to Newquay Airport

Transport for Cornwall service 56 stops at Newquay Airport and connects the terminal with Newquay and Padstow. The route also serves Watergate Bay, Mawgan Porth, St Eval, Constantine Bay and St Merryn.

The journey between Newquay Bus Station and the airport takes around 25 to 30 minutes, although timings vary by service. From Padstow, allow roughly an hour.

For an extreme day trip, check the timetable carefully in both directions before booking your flights. Service frequency and operating times vary, and the bus may not work for particularly early departures or late arrivals.

Newquay has a railway station, but the airport does not. You can therefore travel by train to Newquay and continue towards the airport by bus or taxi, although for very early or late flights, driving or arranging a taxi may be simpler.

Temporary change: Due to road changes associated with the Mid Cornwall Metro works, some buses to Newquay currently cannot serve Newquay Railway Station. Check the latest timetable before travelling.

Getting to Newquay Airport by Train

Newquay Airport does not have its own railway station.

The usual option is to take the train to Newquay railway station, then take a bus or taxi to the airport. When comparing journeys, allow time for the transfer between the train and airport, as well as potential delays.

    👉 Compare trains to Newquay

For very early flights, the first train of the morning may not get you to Newquay in time, so check the complete journey before booking your flight.

    Newquay Airport Hotels

If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near the airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.

There are relatively few hotels immediately beside Newquay Airport, but plenty of places to stay in Newquay, Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth, all within a short drive of the terminal.

It is worth comparing accommodation with the cost and convenience of travelling to the airport early in the morning, particularly if you are coming from elsewhere in Cornwall. For the earliest departures, a hotel combined with a pre-booked taxi can make the start of your trip much easier.

    Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up

    Drop-off & Pick-up at Newquay Airport

Newquay Airport allows 10 minutes free for drop-off and pick-up in the East and West Car Park, which are within easy walking distance of the terminal.

If you need longer, normal airport parking charges apply. The airport has three on-site car parks, all within walking distance of the terminal, with payment available through the JustPark app or at the airport’s parking machines.

Days & Stays tip: The free 10-minute period makes drop-offs particularly convenient for an extreme day trip. If someone is collecting you on your return, it makes sense for them to time their arrival carefully rather than entering the car park too early.

Planning Your Trip from Newquay Airport

Illustration of planning an extreme day trip from Newquay Airport with flights, transfers, travel documents and timings.

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture. It’s also worth thinking about how you’ll get to Newquay Airport, how quickly you can reach your destination after landing, and how much time you’ll realistically have before your return flight.

Check whether your flights are on the same or separate bookings, consider appropriate travel insurance and have a plan for disruption.

More help: Read our guide to planning an extreme day trip, including delays, cancellations, travel insurance, separate flight bookings and passenger rights.

    Things to Do

👉 Find things to do with GetYourGuide

Extreme Day Trips from Newquay Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Newquay Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from Newquay Airport?

Yes. Some destinations can be possible as same-day trips from Newquay when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Newquay Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Routes such as Dublin, London and Manchester are good places to look for possible same-day combinations, but suitable flights depend on the timetable operating on your chosen date. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations are possible.

What are the best extreme day trips from Newquay Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early flight from Newquay, a late return flight and a quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Flight times and frequencies change throughout the year, so a destination that makes an excellent day trip on one date may offer very little time on another.

Can I find city breaks from Newquay Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Newquay Airport as well as same-day trips.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Newquay Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Newquay Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Newquay Airport cheap?

They can be. Fares vary considerably by route and date, so being flexible about when and where you travel can help. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Newquay Airport, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Newquay?

Not necessarily, but you will need identification that meets your airline’s requirements. Depending on the airline, acceptable photographic identification may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another document accepted by the airline. For international flights, check the passport and entry requirements for your destination before booking.

What happens if there isn’t a suitable return flight on the same day?

Consider turning it into a city break or weekend away. Staying overnight can make many more destinations possible and may provide better flight times. The Days & Stays Flight Finder can search for both same-day trips and short breaks.

Can I book flights through Days & Stays?

Days & Stays is a travel discovery service, not an airline, travel agent or booking provider. We search published flight schedules to help you identify possible trips and may provide links to third-party booking providers where you can check current fares and availability. If you’d rather stay longer, you can also search for a city break, weekend away or short break.

Bournemouth Airport (BOH) is in Dorset, around four miles northeast of Bournemouth town centre. It is particularly convenient for travellers from Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the wider Dorset area, as well as parts of Hampshire and Wiltshire.

For an extreme day trip, we recommend planning your travel to and from Bournemouth Airport before booking your flights. Some of the most useful same-day combinations leave Bournemouth early in the morning or arrive back late at night, when public transport options may be more limited.

    Getting to Bournemouth Airport

With no railway station at Bournemouth Airport, most passengers arrive by car, bus or taxi. For a same-day trip, check your journey in both directions before booking, particularly if your flight leaves early or arrives back late.

Driving and Parking at Bournemouth Airport

Driving can be convenient for early departures or when travelling with others.

Bournemouth Airport has several parking options, including car parks within walking distance of the terminal. Pre-booking can save money, so compare options before you travel.

Bus and Coach to Bournemouth Airport

The Morebus 737 connects Bournemouth Airport with Bournemouth Railway Station and Bournemouth town centre, serving Parley Cross, Northbourne, Westover Retail Park and Winton along the way. The service operates Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.

The Morebus YX1 provides a direct connection between Poole and Bournemouth Airport, serving locations including Hamworthy, Upton, Creekmoor, Broadstone, Canford Heath, Parley Cross and the Aviation Business Park. This also operates Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.

Bournemouth Railway Station provides onward rail connections, while Bournemouth and Poole have wider local and long-distance bus and coach services.

For an extreme day trip, check the return journey carefully before booking your flights. The limited frequency of airport buses, particularly in the evening and at weekends, may mean a taxi or car is a more practical option for some flight times.

Getting to Bournemouth Airport by Train

Bournemouth Airport does not have its own railway station.

The usual option is to take the train to Bournemouth Railway Station, then continue to the airport by the Morebus 737 or taxi. The 737 operates Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays, so it may not suit every flight.

When comparing journeys, allow time to transfer between the train and airport bus, especially for early departures or late returns. If the 737 is not running, a taxi from Bournemouth Railway Station may be the simplest option.

    👉 Compare trains to Bournemouth

For very early flights, the first train of the morning may not get you to Bournemouth in time, so check the complete journey before booking your flight.

    Bournemouth Airport Hotels

If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near the airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.

There are no major hotels directly at Bournemouth Airport, but several accommodation options are available around Christchurch, Ferndown and Bournemouth. Staying nearby and taking a taxi to the terminal can be a practical option for an early morning departure.

It is worth comparing a hotel and parking package with booking accommodation and airport parking separately, especially if you would otherwise have a long drive to Bournemouth in the early hours.

    Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up

Drop-off and Pick-up at Bournemouth Airport

Bournemouth Airport’s Express Drop-off/Pick-up Area is in Car Park 1, directly opposite the terminal building. As of 5 October 2026, the charge is £8 for up to 30 minutes.

Enter via Car Park 1 and use the left-hand lanes, then follow the signs for the Express Drop-off/Pick-up spaces. You can pay at the pay stations or by card or phone at the exit barriers.

Days & Stays tip: If you’re being dropped off for an extreme day trip, factor the £8 charge into your travel costs. If someone is collecting you later the same day, check your return flight before they set off to avoid paying for a longer stay than necessary.

Don’t stop outside the designated parking areas or directly in front of the terminal. Airport security restrictions mean vehicles cannot park at the front of the terminal building.

Extreme Day Trips from Bournemouth Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Bournemouth Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from Bournemouth Airport?

Yes. A number of destinations can be possible as same-day trips from Bournemouth when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Bournemouth Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Edinburgh may offer a useful same-day combination on some dates, while other European cities can become possible on particular days or during seasonal flying programmes. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations are possible on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from Bournemouth Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early flight from Bournemouth, a late return flight and a quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Flight times change throughout the year, so a destination that makes an excellent day trip on one date may offer very little time on another.

Can I find city breaks from Bournemouth Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Bournemouth Airport as well as same-day trips.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Bournemouth Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Bournemouth Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Bournemouth Airport cheap?

They can be. Low-cost airlines sometimes offer inexpensive fares from Bournemouth, particularly if you are flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Bournemouth Airport, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Bournemouth?

Any booking, payment and contract for travel is made directly with the provider you choose.

Some links on Days & Stays are affiliate links. If you make a booking or purchase through one of these links, we may receive a commission from the provider at no additional cost to you. This helps support Days & Stays and ThisIsSouthWest.com.

We’ll search the available published schedules and show destinations where a day trip could be possible. If you’d rather stay longer, you can also search for a city break, weekend away or short break.

Where Can You Go for a Day Trip from Exeter Airport?

The answer changes with the flight schedule. A destination that’s perfect for an extreme day trip on one date may have no suitable same-day return on another.

Edinburgh and Dublin are obvious places to look, but other destinations may become possible depending on the day’s schedule. With an early departure from Exeter and a late enough flight home, the Days & Stays Flight Finder can identify the combinations that give you useful time at your destination.

No single destination is always cheapest. Fares vary by date, demand, and how far ahead you book.

Rather than choosing somewhere because it is normally considered cheap, compare the total cost of the trip, including travel to Exeter Airport, destination transfers, accommodation if required and anything you want to do while you’re there.

    About Exeter Airport

Stylised illustration of Exeter Airport terminal with a passenger aircraft taking off
Illustration of Exeter Airport Departures by Days & Stays

Exeter Airport (EXT) is in East Devon, around six miles east of Exeter city centre. It is particularly convenient for travellers from Devon and parts of Somerset, Dorset and Cornwall.

The airport has a single passenger terminal and is relatively small, so getting around is generally straightforward. However, Exeter Airport does not have its own railway station, something worth considering when planning an early departure or late return.

For an extreme day trip, we recommend planning your travel to and from Exeter Airport before booking your flights. Some of the most useful same-day combinations or short breaks leave Exeter early in the morning or arrive back late at night, when public transport options may be more limited.

    Getting to Exeter Airport

With no railway station at Exeter Airport, most passengers arrive by car, bus or taxi. For a same-day trip, check your journey in both directions before booking, particularly if your flight leaves early or arrives back late.

Driving and Parking at Exeter Airport

Driving can be particularly convenient for early departures or when travelling with others.

Exeter Airport has several parking options, including car parks close to the terminal and longer-stay parking. Pre-booking can save money, so compare options before you travel.

Bus, Train and Taxi to Exeter Airport

For many passengers, particularly those catching an early morning flight or arriving late in the evening, being dropped off by car or travelling by taxi is likely the simplest way to reach Exeter Airport.

The Stagecoach 4A connects Exeter Airport with Exeter city centre and Exeter St Davids railway station, while the 43 connects the airport with Pinhoe railway station. Services can be limited at weekends and on bank holidays, so check the timetable against your flight times before relying on the bus.

Exeter Airport does not have its own railway station. Cranbrook is the nearest station, around 3 miles away, but there is no direct airport bus connection, so you’ll need a taxi for the final part of the journey. Exeter Central is around 6 miles away and Exeter St Davids around 7 miles away, with the 4A providing the most straightforward bus connection from St Davids.

If you are planning an extreme day trip from Exeter Airport, check the return journey as carefully as the outbound one. A flight arriving back in Exeter late in the evening may land after convenient public transport connections have finished.

Exeter Airport lists Apple Taxis Exeter as its airport taxi provider. You can pre-book taxis by calling 01392 666666 or through the Apple Taxis website.

👉 See the Stagecoach 4A Timetables here.

Getting to Exeter Airport by Train

Exeter Airport does not have its own railway station.

The usual option is to travel by train to Exeter St Davids and continue to the airport by the Stagecoach 4A bus. When comparing journeys, allow time for the transfer between the train and airport bus, as well as potential delays.

    👉 Compare trains to Exeter

For very early flights, the first train of the morning may not get you to Exeter in time, so check the complete journey before booking your flight.

    Exeter Airport Hotels

If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near Exeter Airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.

The Fair Oak House is directly opposite Exeter Airport and within easy walking distance of the terminal, making it one of the most convenient options for an early departure. There are also hotels around Exeter and the surrounding area, although you will generally need a taxi or car to reach the airport.

It is worth comparing the cost of an overnight stay with airport parking, particularly if you have a long drive to Exeter or need to reach the terminal early in the morning.

    Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up

Exeter Airport has a useful free drop-off and pick-up option in Car Park P4, where you can park for up to 30 minutes without charge. This can be a good choice if someone is taking you to the airport or collecting you after your flight.

For a more convenient drop-off, Car Park P1 is directly opposite the main terminal. The current drive-up charge is £8 for up to 15 minutes, rising to £15 for stays between 15 and 60 minutes.

Days & Stays tip: For an extreme day trip, being dropped off at Exeter Airport can be one of the easiest options. If you do not need to be left immediately outside the terminal, use Car Park P4 for up to 30 minutes free, rather than paying the P1 drop-off charge.

If someone is collecting you, P4 also gives them up to 30 minutes free. Check your flight has landed before entering the car park if there is any risk of exceeding the free period.

Do not stop on the airport’s terminal approach roads. Stopping there is prohibited under the airport’s byelaws.

Planning Your Trip from Exeter Airport

Illustration of planning an extreme day trip with flights, transfers, travel documents and timings.

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture. It’s also worth thinking about how you’ll get to Exeter Airport, how quickly you can reach your destination after landing, and how much time you’ll realistically have before your return flight.

Check whether your flights are on the same or separate bookings, consider appropriate travel insurance and have a plan for disruption.

More help: Read our guide to planning an extreme day trip, including delays, cancellations, travel insurance, separate flight bookings and passenger rights.

Extreme Day Trips from Exeter Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Exeter Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from Exeter Airport?

Yes. Some destinations can be possible as same-day trips from Exeter when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. Exeter has a smaller route network than some larger UK airports, so the options vary considerably by date and season. The Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Exeter Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date and the flight schedules operating that day. Some routes can offer useful same-day combinations, while others may only work on particular days or during seasonal flying programmes. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations work on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from Exeter Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early flight from Exeter, a late return flight and a straightforward journey from the destination airport into the city or resort. Flight times change throughout the year, so a destination that makes an excellent day trip on one date may offer very little time on another.

Can I find city breaks from Exeter Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Exeter Airport as well as same-day trips.

You still need to allow time to leave the airport, travel into the city or resort and return in good time for your flight home.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Exeter Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Exeter Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Exeter Airport cheap?

They can be. Fares vary considerably by route, date and airline, so it can pay to be flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Exeter Airport, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Exeter?

No account. No login. Just choose a date and see where you could go.

Where could you fly for the day?

Choose your airport and date and we’ll find flights that give you enough time to enjoy the destination and still fly home again.

    About Bristol Airport

Bristol Airport (BRS) is in North Somerset, around eight miles south of Bristol city centre. It is the largest airport in South West England and is particularly handy for travellers from Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, South Wales and parts of Devon.

The airport has a single passenger terminal, so getting around is relatively straightforward. However, Bristol Airport does not have its own railway station, something worth considering when planning an early departure or late return.

For an extreme day trip, we recommend planning your travel to and from Bristol Airport before booking your flights. Some of the most useful same-day combinations leave Bristol early in the morning or arrive back late at night, when public transport options may be more limited.

    Getting to Bristol Airport

With no railway station at Bristol Airport, most passengers arrive by car, bus or coach. For a same-day trip, check your journey in both directions before booking, particularly if your flight leaves early or arrives back late.

Driving and Parking at Bristol Airport

Driving can be convenient for early departures or when travelling with others.

Bristol Airport has several parking options, from car parks within walking distance of the terminal to park-and-ride facilities. Pre-booking can save money, so it is worth comparing options before you travel.

Bus and Coach to Bristol Airport

Bristol Airport’s bus and coach interchange is just a short walk from the terminal, with four Airport Flyer routes:

A1 Bristol Airport Flyer connects Bristol Bus Station, the city centre, Bristol Temple Meads and Bedminster with the airport, with services running 24 hours a day.

A2 Portishead Airport Flyer serves Portishead, Clevedon, Nailsea and Backwell, with services running up to hourly, 24 hours a day.

A3 Weston Airport Flyer connects Weston-super-Mare and Worle with the airport via Congresbury and Cleeve.

A4 Bath Airport Flyer connects Bath with Bristol Airport via Saltford, Keynsham and South Bristol.

From further afield, the South West Falcon serves the airport from Plymouth, Exeter, Cullompton, Wellington, Taunton and Bridgwater, with other coaches connecting Bristol Airport with South Wales and elsewhere in the UK.

We’ve used the South West Falcon from Taunton ourselves and find it one of the easiest ways to reach Bristol Airport. It avoids airport parking and drops you at the airport’s transport interchange.

Getting to Bristol Airport by Train

Bristol Airport does not have its own railway station.

The usual option is to travel by train to Bristol Temple Meads and continue to the airport by the A1 Airport Flyer. When comparing journeys, allow time for the transfer between the train and airport bus, as well as potential delays.

    👉 Compare trains to Bristol

For very early flights, the first train of the morning may not get you to Bristol in time, so check the complete journey before booking your flight.

    Bristol Airport Hotels

If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near the airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.

Hotels near Bristol Airport include the Hampton by Hilton, which is on the airport site and within walking distance of the terminal. Other hotels nearby offer transfers or can be combined with airport parking.

It is worth comparing a hotel and parking package with the cost of booking both separately, particularly if you would otherwise have a long drive to Bristol in the early hours.

    Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up

Bristol Airport’s Drop-off & Pick-up Car Park is at the Transport Interchange, around a 3 to 5 minute walk from the terminal. Current charges start at £8.50 for up to 10 minutes. The car park is cashless and uses automatic number plate recognition.

Alternatively, the free Waiting Zone near the Car Rental Centre allows up to one hour without charge and is connected to the terminal area by a frequent shuttle bus. You can use it for both dropping off and collecting passengers.

Days & Stays tip: If you’re being dropped off for an extreme day trip and don’t mind the short shuttle ride, using the free Waiting Zone can save the £8.50 drop-off charge.

Don’t stop on the airport’s red routes or access roads. These are monitored, and stopping can result in a parking charge.

Planning Your Trip from Bristol Airport

Illustration of planning an extreme day trip from Bristol Airport with flights, transfers, travel documents and timings.

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture. It’s also worth thinking about how you’ll get to Bristol Airport, how quickly you can reach your destination after landing, and how much time you’ll realistically have before your return flight.

Check whether your flights are on the same or separate bookings, consider appropriate travel insurance and have a plan for disruption.

More help: Read our guide to planning an extreme day trip, including delays, cancellations, travel insurance, separate flight bookings and passenger rights.

    Things to Do

For an extreme day trip, it’s worth booking popular attractions, tours and experiences in advance. Spending an hour queuing isn’t ideal when you only have a day.

👉 Find things to do with GetYourGuide

Extreme Day Trips from Bristol Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Bristol Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from Bristol Airport?

Yes. A number of destinations can be possible as same-day trips from Bristol when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Bristol Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Destinations such as Dublin and Amsterdam can offer useful same-day combinations, while other European cities may become possible on particular days or during seasonal flying programmes. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations are possible on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from Bristol Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early flight from Bristol, a late return flight and a quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Flight times change throughout the year, so a destination that makes an excellent day trip on one date may offer very little time on another.

Can I find city breaks from Bristol Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Bristol Airport as well as same-day trips.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Bristol Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Bristol Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Bristol Airport cheap?

They can be. Low-cost airlines sometimes offer inexpensive fares from Bristol, particularly if you are flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Bristol Airport, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Bristol?

Any booking, payment and contract for travel is made directly with the provider you choose.

Does Days & Stays earn commission?

Some links on Days & Stays are affiliate links. If you make a booking or purchase through one of these links, we may receive a commission from the provider at no additional cost to you. This helps support Days & Stays and ThisIsSouthWest.com.

How do I find extreme day trips from Bristol Airport?

Choose Bristol Airport, select your travel date and choose a same-day trip in the Days & Stays Flight Finder. We’ll search the available published schedules and show destinations where a day trip could be possible. If you’d rather stay longer, you can also search for a city break, weekend away or short break.
