Planning Your Trip from Liverpool Airport

Illustration of planning an extreme day trip from Liverpool Bradford Airport with flights, transfers, travel documents and timings.

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture. It’s also worth thinking about how you’ll get to Liverpool Airport, how quickly you can reach your destination after landing, and how much time you’ll realistically have before your return flight.

How Much Time Will You Really Have?

Days & Stays shows the scheduled time between your arrival and return flights, but that isn’t the same as sightseeing time.

Allow plenty of time to leave the airport, travel into the city, and return with time to make your flight home. Ten hours between flights with a 15-minute airport transfer could give you more useful time than 12 hours with a lengthy journey into the city.

Our destination guides include airport transfer information to help you work out how much time you’ll actually have.

    Travel Light

For a day trip, a small under-seat bag may be all you need. Travelling without checked luggage saves time and avoids waiting at baggage reclaim.

Check the cabin baggage allowance included with your fare before travelling.

    Check Your Travel Documents

You’ll need suitable identification, including on domestic flights. Depending on your airline, this may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another accepted form of photographic ID.

For international trips, check your destination’s passport, visa and travel authorisation requirements before booking.

    Allow for Things Going Wrong

Delays matter more when you only have a day, and a cancellation could leave you needing an unexpected overnight stay.

Check whether your flights are on the same or separate bookings, consider appropriate travel insurance and have a plan for disruption.

Extreme Day Trips from Liverpool Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Liverpool Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from Liverpool Airport?

Yes. A number of destinations can be possible as same-day trips from Liverpool Airport when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Liverpool Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Some destinations can offer useful same-day flight combinations from Liverpool Airport, while others may become possible only on particular days or during seasonal flying programmes. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations are possible on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from Liverpool Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early flight from Liverpool Airport, a late return flight and a quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Flight times change throughout the year, so a destination that makes an excellent day trip on one date may offer very little time on another.

Can I find city breaks from Liverpool Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Liverpool Airport as well as same-day trips. Choose your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, and the Flight Finder will search published schedules for destinations that could fit your trip.

How long should I have at my destination?

We generally look for at least eight hours between the scheduled arrival and departure flights when searching for a worthwhile day trip. Remember that this isn’t eight hours of sightseeing. You still need to allow time to leave the airport, travel into the city and return in good time for your flight home.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Liverpool Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Liverpool Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Liverpool Airport cheap?

They can be. Low-cost airlines sometimes offer inexpensive fares from Liverpool Airport, particularly if you are flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to the airport, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Liverpool Airport?

Not necessarily, but you will need identification that meets your airline’s requirements. Depending on the airline, acceptable photographic identification may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another document accepted by the airline. For international flights, check the passport and entry requirements for your destination before booking.

What happens if there isn’t a suitable return flight on the same day?

Consider turning it into a city break or weekend away. Staying overnight can make many more destinations possible and may provide better flight times. The Days & Stays Flight Finder can search for both same-day trips and short breaks.

Can I book flights through Days & Stays?

Days & Stays is a travel discovery service, not an airline, travel agent or booking provider. We search published flight schedules to help you identify possible trips and may provide links to third-party booking providers where you can check current fares and availability. Any booking, payment and contract for travel is made directly with the provider you choose.

Does Days & Stays earn commission?

Some links on Days & Stays are affiliate links. If you make a booking or purchase through one of these links, we may receive a commission from the provider at no additional cost to you. This helps support Days & Stays and ThisIsSouthWest.com.

How do I find extreme day trips from Liverpool Airport?

If you’d rather stay longer, you can also search for a city break, weekend away or short break.

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Leeds Bradford Airport as well as same-day trips.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Leeds Bradford Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Leeds Bradford Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Leeds Bradford Airport cheap?

Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to the airport, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Leeds Bradford Airport?

Not necessarily, but you will need identification that meets your airline’s requirements. Depending on the airline, acceptable photographic identification may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another document accepted by the airline. For international flights, check the passport and entry requirements for your destination before booking.

What happens if there isn’t a suitable return flight on the same day?

Consider turning it into a city break or weekend away. Staying overnight can make many more destinations possible and may provide better flight times. The Days & Stays Flight Finder can search for both same-day trips and short breaks.

    About London Luton Airport

Illustration of Luton airport passenger terminal with aircraft taking off.

London Luton Airport (LTN) is in Bedfordshire, around 35 miles north of central London. Its location and extensive flight network make it a major departure point for travellers from London, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and across the surrounding region.

The airport has a single passenger terminal, making it relatively straightforward to navigate between check-in, security and the departure gates.

Luton Airport Parkway railway station offers frequent rail connections to central London and other destinations, with the Luton DART linking the station directly to the airport terminal.

For an extreme day trip, we recommend planning your travel to and from Luton Airport before booking your flights. Some of the best same-day combinations involve a very early departure or late return, so check that your train, coach or other airport transport works with both flights.

    Getting to London Luton Airport

With Luton Airport Parkway railway station connected to the terminal by the Luton DART, alongside regular coach and bus services, London Luton Airport is well connected to London and the surrounding region. For a same-day trip, check both legs of your journey before booking, especially if your flight leaves early or you arrive back late.

Driving and Parking at London Luton Airport

Driving can be convenient for very early departures, late arrivals or when travelling with others. London Luton Airport offers several parking options, including Terminal Car Park 1, Terminal Car Park 2, Mid Stay and Long Stay parking.

If you’re planning an extreme day trip, consider the transfer time between your chosen car park and the terminal. Some parking options are within walking distance of the terminal, while others require a shuttle bus, so allow enough time to park and reach departures.

Pre-booking airport parking is often cheaper than paying on the day, especially when you book in advance. Compare options and factor in both parking cost and transfer time for your overall journey.

Bus and Coach to London Luton Airport

London Luton Airport is well connected by bus and coach, with direct services linking the airport with central London and destinations across the surrounding region and wider UK. Coaches stop close to the passenger terminal, making them a useful alternative to travelling via Luton Airport Parkway railway station.

National Express operates services between Luton Airport and several locations in London, as well as connections to other towns, cities and airports. Other operators, including Green Line, provide additional coach and bus connections.

Some services operate throughout the night, which can be particularly useful for an extreme day trip involving a very early departure or late return. However, frequencies vary by route and time of day, so check the timetable for your particular travel date before booking your flights.

Getting to London Luton Airport by Train

Luton Airport Parkway railway station serves London Luton Airport, with the Luton DART providing a direct connection between the station and the airport terminal.

Frequent rail services connect Luton Airport Parkway with central London, including direct trains to London St Pancras International, as well as destinations elsewhere on the Thameslink and East Midlands Railway networks. The Luton DART then provides the short onward journey between Luton Airport Parkway and the terminal.

The Luton DART is not normally free when purchased separately. If you’re travelling by rail, look for a through ticket to “Luton Airport” rather than “Luton Airport Parkway”: the DART transfer is included in eligible through rail tickets to Luton Airport. If your ticket only takes you to Luton Airport Parkway, you may need to pay for the DART separately.

For an extreme day trip, check the first and last trains and DART connections for your particular travel date before booking your flights. This is especially important for very early departures or late-evening arrivals, when mainline rail services may be less frequent.

    London Luton Airport Hotels

If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near London Luton Airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.

Hotels at or very close to the airport include the Holiday Inn Express London – Luton Airport, Courtyard by Marriott Luton Airport and ibis London Luton Airport. Several other hotels are also around the airport and nearby Luton, though distance from the terminal and available transfer options vary.

Some hotels near Luton Airport offer packages that combine an overnight stay with airport parking, which can be particularly useful for early morning departures or if public transport doesn’t run early enough for your flight.

You can also find more accommodation in Luton and around Luton Airport Parkway, giving you additional options if the hotels closest to the terminal are expensive or unavailable. Compare the total cost of accommodation, parking, public transport, and any airport transfers rather than choosing based on room price alone.

    Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up

Pick-Up and Drop-Off at London Luton Airport

London Luton Airport has a dedicated drop-off area close to the terminal for passengers being dropped off or collected. Charges apply, so check the current price and maximum stay before travelling rather than assuming you can stop outside the terminal for free.

For a lower-cost alternative, Luton Airport also offers pick-up and drop-off options via its car parks, though these involve a longer walk or transfer to and from the terminal. The best option will depend on how quickly you need to reach the terminal and whether you are dropping someone off or waiting for an arriving passenger.

Days & Stays tip: If you’re being dropped off for an extreme day trip, check the airport’s current drop-off arrangements before travelling. If someone is collecting you after your return flight, agree on the car park or meeting point in advance, particularly if your flight arrives late. Allow for the Luton DART or other transfer arrangements if your chosen meeting point isn’t at the terminal.

Planning Your Trip from Luton Airport

Illustration of planning an extreme day trip from London Luton Airport with flights, transfers, travel documents and timings.

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture. Also consider how you’ll get to Luton Airport, how quickly you can reach your destination after landing, and how much time you’ll realistically have before your return flight.

Check whether your flights are on the same or separate bookings, consider appropriate travel insurance, and plan for disruption.

More help: Read our guide to planning an extreme day trip, including delays, cancellations, travel insurance, separate flight bookings and passenger rights.

Our destination guides focus on places you can realistically visit in the time you have.

Turn Your Day Trip into a Short Break

If the flight times aren’t quite right for a day trip, staying for one or two nights can open up many more possibilities and give you more time to explore.

    👉 Find accommodation with Booking.com

Days & Stays covers both same-day trips and short breaks, so don’t rule out a destination just because the flights don’t work in a single day.

    Getting Around When You Arrive

Check how you’ll get from the airport to where you actually want to go. Some airports have fast rail or metro connections, while others require a longer bus, coach or transfer.

Our destination guides include airport transfer information where useful, helping you judge how practical a destination is for a day trip.

Extreme Day Trips from London Luton Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from London Luton Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from London Luton Airport?

Yes. London Luton Airport’s extensive European flight network means a wide range of destinations can potentially work as same-day trips when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Luton Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Luton has flights to destinations across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe, but the important factor for a day trip is the combination of outbound and return flight times. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations could work on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from Luton Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early departure from Luton, a late return flight and a relatively quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Shorter European routes can work particularly well, but Luton’s extensive network means there are plenty of possibilities. Flight times change throughout the year, so check your particular date before deciding where to go.

Can I find city breaks from Luton Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Luton Airport as well as same-day trips. Choose your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, and the Flight Finder will search published schedules for destinations that could fit your trip. Staying for one, two or three nights can open up considerably more destinations and flight combinations.

For airports some distance from the city centre, the amount of usable time can be considerably shorter.

How many terminals does London Luton Airport have?

London Luton Airport has one passenger terminal. This makes planning an extreme day trip simpler than at airports with several separate terminals, although you should still check your airline’s latest flight and check-in information before travelling.

Does Luton Airport have a railway station?

London Luton Airport is served by Luton Airport Parkway railway station. The station is not at the terminal itself: the Luton DART provides the onward connection between Luton Airport Parkway and the airport terminal. Frequent rail services connect Luton Airport Parkway with London St Pancras International and other destinations. If travelling by rail, a through ticket to “Luton Airport” can include the DART connection, while a ticket only to Luton Airport Parkway may require a separate DART fare.

Can I get to Luton early enough for an extreme day trip?

Luton is served by trains via Luton Airport Parkway and the Luton DART, as well as coaches, buses and road connections, making early departures possible for many travellers. However, public transport frequencies can be reduced early in the morning, overnight and at weekends. Check your complete journey to Luton Airport before booking an early flight rather than assuming your normal train or coach service will be running.

Can I get home from Luton after a late return flight?

Often, but this depends on where you live and what time your flight arrives. Check the last train, coach or bus for your route before booking and, if travelling by rail, check the Luton DART connection as well. Remember to allow time after the scheduled landing for taxiing, leaving the aircraft and passing through the airport. If public transport does not work with your return flight, driving, airport parking or staying at a Luton Airport hotel may be worth considering.

How early should I arrive at London Luton Airport?

Allow enough time for check-in if required, security and reaching your departure gate. The time you need will depend on your airline, destination and circumstances, so check the latest advice from London Luton Airport and your airline before travelling. An extreme day trip is already a time-sensitive journey, so trying to save sightseeing time by arriving unusually late at the airport isn’t worth the risk of missing your flight.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Luton Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose London Luton Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Luton Airport cheap?

They can be. Luton’s extensive network of low-cost routes can produce inexpensive fares, particularly if you are flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Luton Airport, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there. The cheapest flight does not always produce the cheapest day trip overall.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Luton Airport?

Not necessarily, but you will need identification that meets your airline’s requirements. Depending on the airline, acceptable photographic identification may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another document accepted by the airline. For international flights, check the passport and entry requirements for your destination before booking.

What happens if there isn’t a suitable return flight on the same day?

Consider turning it into a city break or weekend away. Staying for one or more nights can make many more destinations possible and may provide much better flight times.

About London Stansted Airport

Illustration of Stansted airport passenger terminal with aircraft taking off.

London Stansted Airport (STN) is in Essex, around 40 miles north east of central London. Its location and extensive flight network make it a major departure point for travellers from London, Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and across the East of England.

The airport has a single passenger terminal, making it easy to navigate between check-in, security, and the departure gates. Stansted also has its own railway station directly beneath the terminal, with regular train services to London Liverpool Street and connections from elsewhere in the region.

For an extreme day trip, we recommend planning your travel to and from Stansted Airport before booking your flights. Some of the best same-day combinations involve a very early departure or late return, so check that your train, coach or other airport transport works with both flights.

    Getting to London Stansted Airport

With its own railway station beneath the terminal and regular train, coach and bus services, London Stansted Airport is well connected to London and the East of England. For a same-day trip, check both legs of your journey before booking, especially if your flight leaves early or you arrive back late.

Driving and Parking at London Stansted Airport

Driving can be convenient for very early departures, late arrivals or when travelling with others. London Stansted Airport offers several parking options, including Short Stay, Mid Stay, Long Stay and Meet & Greet parking.

If you’re planning an extreme day trip, consider the transfer time between your chosen car park and the terminal. Some car parks are within walking distance, while others use a shuttle bus, so allow enough time to park and reach departures.

Pre-booking airport parking is often cheaper than paying on the day, especially for longer stays, so compare options and factor the parking and transfer time into your overall journey.

Bus and Coach to London Stansted Airport

London Stansted Airport is well connected by bus and coach, with direct services linking the airport with central London and destinations across the East of England and wider UK. Coaches stop close to the passenger terminal, making them a useful alternative to travelling by train.

National Express operates services between Stansted and several locations in London, as well as connections to other towns, cities and airports. Other coach and local bus services provide connections with destinations including Cambridge, Chelmsford and surrounding areas.

Some services operate throughout the night, which can be particularly useful for an extreme day trip involving a very early departure or late return. However, frequencies vary by route and time of day, so check the timetable for your particular travel date before booking your flights.

Getting to London Stansted Airport by Train

London Stansted Airport has its own railway station, located directly beneath the passenger terminal, making rail one of the easiest ways to reach the airport from London and destinations across the East of England.

The Stansted Express provides direct services from London Liverpool Street, with trains also serving Tottenham Hale for connections with the London Underground. Rail services also connect Stansted with destinations including Cambridge and other towns and cities across the region.

For an extreme day trip, check the first and last trains for your particular travel date before booking your flights. This is especially important for very early departures or late-evening arrivals, when rail services may be less frequent or unavailable.

    Stansted Airport Hotels

If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near London Stansted Airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.

Hotels at or very close to the airport include the Radisson Blu Hotel London Stansted Airport, within walking distance of the terminal, and the Hampton by Hilton London Stansted Airport, also close to the terminal. The Novotel London Stansted Airport is another nearby option, but you’ll need onward transport to reach the terminal.

Several hotels near Stansted offer packages that combine an overnight stay with airport parking, which can be particularly useful for early morning departures or if public transport doesn’t run early enough for your flight.

You can also find more accommodation around Stansted Mountfitchet, Bishop’s Stortford and Takeley, often within a short drive of the airport. It is worth comparing the total cost of accommodation, parking and transfers rather than choosing on room price alone.

    Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up

London Stansted Airport has an Express Set Down area immediately outside the terminal. This is the most convenient option for a quick drop-off and currently costs £10 for up to 15 minutes or £28 for more than 15 minutes, with a maximum stay of 30 minutes. The area is barrierless, and you must pay online or by phone by midnight the day after your visit.

For collecting passengers, Stansted recommends using the Short Stay car parks if you want to meet someone at the terminal. Current turn-up charges for the Green and Blue Short Stay car parks are £13 for up to 30 minutes and £21 for up to one hour.

There is also a useful free option. Stansted’s Mid Stay car park offers up to 60 minutes of free parking for both pick-up and drop-off, with a free shuttle bus connecting the car park to the terminal. The second hour currently costs £5. This can be particularly useful if you are collecting someone and don’t need to meet them immediately outside the terminal.

Days & Stays tip: If you’re being dropped off for an extreme day trip, the Express Set Down is the quickest option, but the free Mid Stay option may be worth considering if you have more time. If someone is collecting you after your return flight, agree on a meeting point in advance, especially if your flight arrives late.

Planning Your Trip from Stansted Airport

Illustration of planning an extreme day trip from London Stansted Airport with flights, transfers, travel documents and timings.

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture. Also consider how you’ll get to Stansted Airport, how quickly you can reach your destination after landing, and how much time you’ll realistically have before your return flight.

Check whether your flights are on the same or separate bookings, consider appropriate travel insurance, and plan for disruption.

More help: Read our guide to planning an extreme day trip, including delays, cancellations, travel insurance, separate flight bookings and passenger rights.

    Things to Do

For an extreme day trip, book popular attractions, tours, and experiences in advance. Spending an hour queuing isn’t ideal when you only have a day.

👉 Find things to do with GetYourGuide

Extreme Day Trips from London Stansted Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from London Stansted Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from London Stansted Airport?

Yes. London Stansted Airport’s extensive European flight network means a wide range of destinations can potentially work as same-day trips when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Stansted Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Stansted has flights to destinations across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe, but the important factor for a day trip is the combination of outbound and return flight times. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations could work on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from Stansted Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early departure from Stansted, a late return flight and a relatively quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Shorter European routes can work particularly well, but Stansted’s extensive network means there are plenty of possibilities. Flight times change throughout the year, so check your particular date before deciding where to go.

Can I find city breaks from Stansted Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Stansted Airport as well as same-day trips. Choose your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, and the Flight Finder will search published schedules for destinations that could fit your trip. Staying for one, two or three nights can open up considerably more destinations and flight combinations.

For airports some distance from the city centre, the amount of usable time can be considerably shorter.

How many terminals does London Stansted Airport have?

London Stansted Airport has one main passenger terminal. This makes planning an extreme day trip simpler than at airports with several separate terminals, although you should still check your airline’s latest flight and check-in information before travelling.

Does Stansted Airport have a railway station?

Yes. Stansted Airport railway station is directly beneath the passenger terminal. The Stansted Express provides direct services to London Liverpool Street, while other rail services connect the airport with destinations including Cambridge. Check first and last train times carefully if your day trip involves a very early departure or late return.

Can I get to Stansted early enough for an extreme day trip?

Stansted has its own railway station and is served by trains, coaches, buses and road connections, making early departures possible for many travellers. However, public transport frequencies can be reduced early in the morning, overnight and at weekends. Check your complete journey to Stansted before booking an early flight rather than assuming your normal train or coach service will be running.

Can I get home from Stansted after a late return flight?

Often, but this depends on where you live and what time your flight arrives. Check the last train, coach or bus for your route before booking. Remember to allow time after the scheduled landing for taxiing, leaving the aircraft and passing through the airport. If public transport does not work with your return flight, driving, airport parking or staying at a Stansted hotel may be worth considering.

How early should I arrive at London Stansted Airport?

Allow enough time for check-in if required, security and reaching your departure gate. The time you need will depend on your airline, destination and circumstances, so check the latest advice from London Stansted Airport and your airline before travelling. An extreme day trip is already a time-sensitive journey, so trying to save sightseeing time by arriving unusually late at the airport isn’t worth the risk of missing your flight.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Stansted Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose London Stansted Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Stansted Airport cheap?

They can be. Stansted’s extensive network of low-cost routes can produce inexpensive fares, particularly if you are flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Stansted, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there. The cheapest flight does not always produce the cheapest day trip overall.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Stansted Airport?

Not necessarily, but you will need identification that meets your airline’s requirements. Depending on the airline, acceptable photographic identification may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another document accepted by the airline. For international flights, check the passport and entry requirements for your destination before booking.

What happens if there isn’t a suitable return flight on the same day?

Consider turning it into a city break or weekend away. Staying for one or more nights can make many more destinations possible and may provide much better flight times.

Where Are the Cheapest Flights from Heathrow Airport?

No single destination is always cheapest. Fares vary by date, demand, and how far ahead you book.

    About London Heathrow Airport

Illustration of Heathrow airport passenger terminal with aircraft taking off.

Heathrow Airport (LHR) is in west London, around 15 miles west of central London. Its location and extensive flight network make it a major departure point for travellers from London and across the South East, as well as passengers connecting from elsewhere in the UK.

The airport has four passenger terminals, Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. Heathrow is particularly well connected by public transport, with the Elizabeth line, Piccadilly line and Heathrow Express providing rail and Underground connections with central London, alongside coach and local bus services.

For an extreme day trip, we recommend planning your travel to and from Heathrow Airport before booking your flights. Some of the best same-day combinations involve a very early departure or late return, so check that your train, Underground, coach or other airport transport works with both flights. Pay particular attention to which terminal your flights use, as travelling between Heathrow’s terminals can add extra time to your journey.

    Getting to Heathrow Airport

With frequent rail, Underground, coach and bus services, Heathrow Airport is well connected to central London and the wider South East. For a same-day trip, check both legs of your journey before booking, especially if your flight leaves early or you arrive back late. Allow enough time to reach the correct terminal, as Heathrow has four passenger terminals spread across the airport.

Driving and Parking at Heathrow Airport

Driving can be convenient for very early departures, late arrivals or when travelling with others. Heathrow Airport offers a range of official parking options serving Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, including Terminal Parking, Park & Ride, Priority Park & Ride and Meet & Greet options.

If you’re planning an extreme day trip, check which terminal your flights use before choosing a car park. Terminals 2 and 3 are close together in the central terminal area, while Terminals 4 and 5 are in separate parts of the airport, so choosing the right car park can save considerable time.

Heathrow’s Park & Ride car parks connect to the terminals via transfer services, while Terminal Parking is located closer to the terminal buildings. Allow enough time for parking, any transfer to the terminal, security and the walk to your departure gate.

If you’re driving to Heathrow, remember the airport charges a Terminal Drop-Off Fee for vehicles using the designated drop-off areas directly outside the terminals. Heathrow is also within the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), so check whether your vehicle meets the required emissions standards before travelling.

Pre-booking airport parking is often cheaper than paying on the day, particularly for longer stays. For an extreme day trip, compare the total parking cost with rail, Underground, and coach fares, as a full day’s parking can significantly affect your overall trip cost.

Bus and Coach to Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport is well connected by bus and coach, with direct services linking the airport with central London and destinations across the South East and wider UK. Services operate from Heathrow’s terminals and the Central Bus Station, making coaches particularly useful for travellers without a convenient direct rail connection.

National Express operates an extensive network of coach services to Heathrow from towns and cities across the UK, including connections with other London airports. Local buses also connect Heathrow with nearby areas across west London, Berkshire and Surrey.

Some bus and coach services run through the night, which can be particularly useful for an extreme day trip with a very early departure or late return. However, stopping points and frequencies vary by route and terminal, so check where your service arrives and departs before booking your flights.

👉 See Heathrow Airport bus and coach information

Getting to Heathrow Airport by Train

Heathrow Airport has rail and London Underground stations serving its passenger terminals, making public transport one of the easiest ways to reach the airport from central London and destinations across the South East.

The Elizabeth line provides direct services between Heathrow and central London, continuing through stations including Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf. Heathrow Express provides a faster direct service between London Paddington and Heathrow, while the Piccadilly line connects the airport with central London via the London Underground network.

For an extreme day trip, check the first and last trains for your particular travel date before booking your flights. This is especially important for very early departures or late-evening arrivals. Also check which terminal your flight uses, as Heathrow has separate stations serving different terminal areas.

    Heathrow Airport Hotels

If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near Heathrow Airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.

Hotels at or very close to the airport include the Hilton London Heathrow Airport, connected to Terminal 4 by a covered walkway, and the Sofitel London Heathrow, directly connected to Terminal 5. Plenty of hotels are also around Terminals 2 and 3 and along Bath Road, with airport transfers available from many properties.

Several Heathrow hotels offer packages that combine an overnight stay with airport parking, which can be particularly useful for early morning departures or if public transport doesn’t run early enough for your flight.

Plenty of other hotels are available around Hounslow, Hayes and West Drayton, often with good transport connections to Heathrow. Because the airport is so large, check how you will get from your hotel to your particular terminal and how long the journey takes. It is worth comparing the total cost of accommodation, parking and transfers rather than choosing on room price alone.

👉 Compare Heathrow Airport hotels and parking with Holiday Extras

    Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up

Heathrow Airport has dedicated drop-off zones directly outside Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. A £7 Terminal Drop-Off Charge applies each time a vehicle enters one of these areas, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

There are no barriers or payment machines in the terminal drop-off zones. You can pay in advance, on the day, or by midnight the following day. The drop-off areas are for dropping passengers off only, so waiting and passenger pick-ups are not permitted.

If you would rather avoid the charge, free drop-off is available at Heathrow’s Park & Ride car parks, with a free bus transfer to the terminals. This can be worth considering if someone is driving you to the airport for an extreme day trip.

👉 See Heathrow Airport drop-off information

For collecting passengers, Heathrow recommends using its designated passenger pick-up areas rather than the terminal drop-off zones, where pick-ups and waiting are not permitted.

For Terminals 2, 3 and 5, you can collect passengers from Terminal Parking or the Park & Ride car parks. The first 29 minutes at Park & Ride are currently free, which can be useful if you do not need to meet someone immediately outside the terminal.

Terminal 4 has different arrangements. A Priority Pick-Up Area is available outside the terminal for a fee, while Zone A of the Terminal 4 Park & Ride currently offers up to two hours of free parking.

Because Heathrow has four passenger terminals, always check the arrival terminal before setting off. It is also sensible to wait until the passenger has landed and is ready to leave the terminal before entering a paid pick-up area.

Days & Stays tip: If you’re being dropped off for an extreme day trip, check which terminal your outbound flight uses before setting off. It is also worth checking the terminal for your return flight, as it may be different. If somebody is collecting you, agree on a meeting point in advance, particularly if your flight arrives back late.

Planning Your Trip from Heathrow Airport

Illustration of planning an extreme day trip from London Heathrow Airport with flights, transfers, travel documents and timings.

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture. Also consider how you’ll get to Heathrow Airport, how quickly you can reach your destination after landing, and how much time you’ll realistically have before your return flight.

How Much Time Will You Really Have?

Days & Stays shows the scheduled time between your arrival and return flights, but that isn’t the same as sightseeing time.

Allow plenty of time to leave the airport, travel into the city, and return with time to make your flight home. Ten hours between flights, plus a 15-minute airport transfer, could give you more useful time than 12 hours with a lengthy journey into the city.

Check whether your flights are on the same or separate bookings, consider appropriate travel insurance, and plan for disruption.

More help: Read our guide to planning an extreme day trip, including delays, cancellations, travel insurance, separate flight bookings and passenger rights.

Turn Your Day Trip into a Short Break

    👉 Find accommodation with Booking.com

Days & Stays covers both same-day trips and short breaks, so don’t rule out a destination just because the flights don’t work in a single day.

    Getting Around When You Arrive

Check how you’ll get from the airport to where you actually want to go. Some airports have fast rail or metro connections, while others require a longer bus, coach or transfer.

Our destination guides include airport transfer information where useful, helping you judge how practical a destination is for a day trip.

Extreme Day Trips from Heathrow Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Heathrow Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from Heathrow Airport?

Yes. Heathrow Airport’s extensive flight network means a wide range of destinations can potentially work as same-day trips when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Heathrow Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Heathrow has flights to destinations across the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe and further afield, but the important factor for a day trip is the combination of outbound and return flight times. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations could work on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from Heathrow Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early departure from Heathrow, a late return flight and a relatively quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Shorter European routes can work particularly well, with cities such as Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels and other well-connected destinations potentially offering useful same-day combinations. Flight times change throughout the year, so search your particular date before deciding where to go.

Can I find city breaks from Heathrow Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Heathrow Airport as well as same-day trips. Choose your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, and the Flight Finder will search published schedules for destinations that could fit your trip. Staying for one, two or three nights can open up considerably more destinations and flight combinations.

For airports some distance from the city centre, the amount of usable time can be considerably shorter.

Which Heathrow terminal does my flight use?

Heathrow Airport has four passenger terminals: Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. Airlines operate from different terminals and arrangements can change, so check the terminal shown on your booking or with your airline before travelling. This is particularly important when arranging parking, drop-off, collection or public transport.

Can I fly from one Heathrow terminal and return to another?

Potentially, yes. Your outbound and return flights may not necessarily use the same terminal, particularly if you are travelling with different airlines. Check both flights before arranging parking, drop-off or collection. Heathrow is a large airport, so returning to a different terminal can affect where you need to travel after landing.

Can I get to Heathrow early enough for an extreme day trip?

Heathrow has excellent public transport connections, including the Elizabeth line, Piccadilly line, Heathrow Express, coaches and buses. However, very early flights can depart before some normal public transport services are running. Check your complete journey to Heathrow before booking an early flight, including which terminal you need to reach.

Can I get home from Heathrow after a late return flight?

Often, but this depends on where you live and what time your flight arrives. Check the last Elizabeth line, Underground, rail, coach or bus service for your route before booking. Remember to allow time after the scheduled landing for taxiing, leaving the aircraft and passing through the airport. If public transport does not work with your return flight, driving, airport parking or staying at a Heathrow hotel may be worth considering.

How early should I arrive at Heathrow Airport?

Allow enough time for check-in if required, security and reaching your departure gate. The time you need will depend on your airline, destination and circumstances, so check the latest advice from Heathrow Airport and your airline before travelling. Heathrow is a large airport and some gates can be a considerable distance from security, so trying to save sightseeing time by arriving unusually late isn’t worth the risk of missing your flight.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Heathrow Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Heathrow Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Heathrow Airport cheap?

They can be, although Heathrow is not always the obvious choice for the very cheapest fares. Its advantage is the size of its route network and the frequency of flights on many routes, which can create useful same-day combinations. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Heathrow, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there. The cheapest flight does not always produce the cheapest day trip overall.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Heathrow Airport?

Not necessarily, but you will need identification that meets your airline’s requirements. Depending on the airline, acceptable photographic identification may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another document accepted by the airline. For international flights, check the passport and entry requirements for your destination before booking.

What happens if there isn’t a suitable return flight on the same day?

Consider turning it into a city break or weekend away. Staying for one or more nights can make many more destinations possible and may provide much better flight times. The Days & Stays Flight Finder can search for both same-day trips and short breaks.

Can I book flights through Days & Stays?

    Getting to Glasgow Airport

With no railway station at Glasgow Airport, most passengers arrive by car, bus or coach. For a same-day trip, check your journey in both directions before booking, particularly if your flight leaves early or arrives back late.

Driving and Parking at Glasgow Airport

Driving can be particularly convenient for early departures, late returns or when travelling with others. Glasgow Airport is just off the M8, around eight miles west of Glasgow city centre, making it relatively easy to reach from Glasgow and much of the west of Scotland.

The airport has several parking options, including short-stay and long-stay parking, with spaces available close to the terminal as well as options requiring a short transfer. Pre-booking can be considerably cheaper than paying on the day, so it is worth comparing the available car parks before you travel.

For an extreme day trip, check the opening times, transfer arrangements and walking distance to the terminal, particularly if you need to arrive at the airport very early in the morning or collect your car late at night.

Bus and Coach to Glasgow Airport

Glasgow Airport has good bus connections, with services stopping directly outside the terminal.

The Glasgow Airport Express 500 is the main service between Glasgow city centre and the airport. It runs 24 hours a day, with buses as often as every 10 minutes during the day, and connects Buchanan Bus Station and central Glasgow with the airport. The fastest journeys take around 15 minutes, making it particularly useful for early departures and late returns.

For travellers arriving by train, the McGill’s 757 connects nearby Paisley Gilmour Street station with Glasgow Airport. The station is just over a mile from the terminal and has regular rail connections with Glasgow Central.

Other services connect the airport with destinations further afield. Citylink coaches serve destinations including Loch Lomond, Fort William, Skye and Oban, while FlixBus provides connections with Stirling, Perth, Dundee and Aberdeen.

For an extreme day trip, the 24-hour Airport Express 500 is likely to be the most useful option if you’re travelling from central Glasgow, particularly when your flight leaves before normal daytime public transport begins operating.

Getting to Glasgow Airport by Train

Glasgow Airport does not have its own railway station.

The nearest station is Paisley Gilmour Street, around a mile from the terminal. Regular trains connect Paisley with Glasgow Central, and you can continue between the station and airport by bus or taxi.

When comparing journeys, allow time for the transfer between the train and airport, particularly for an early morning departure or late evening return. For very early flights, the 24-hour Glasgow Airport Express 500 from central Glasgow may be a more practical option.

    Glasgow Airport Hotels

If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near the airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.

Hotels near Glasgow Airport include the Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport, which is directly opposite the terminal and within easy walking distance. There is also a Holiday Inn Express nearby, along with several other hotels around the airport and Paisley.

It is worth comparing a hotel and parking package with the cost of booking both separately, particularly if you are travelling from further afield or would otherwise need to drive to Glasgow Airport in the early hours.

    Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up

Glasgow Airport’s Express Pick Up & Drop Off area is directly outside the main terminal building. The current charge is £7 for up to 15 minutes, with higher charges applying if you stay longer. Payment is by card or contactless.

Alternatively, the Long Stay Car Park can be used for pick-up or drop-off free of charge for up to one hour. A free shuttle bus connects the car park with the terminal, with the journey taking around five minutes.

Days & Stays tip: If you’re being dropped off for an extreme day trip and don’t mind allowing a little extra time for the shuttle, the Long Stay Car Park can save the £7 Express Pick Up & Drop Off charge.

If you need longer at the terminal, use the Terminal Multi Storey rather than remaining in the Express Pick Up & Drop Off area.

More help: Read our guide to planning an extreme day trip, including delays, cancellations, travel insurance, separate flight bookings and passenger rights.

Extreme Day Trips from Glasgow Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Glasgow Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from Glasgow Airport?

Yes. A number of destinations can be possible as same-day trips from Glasgow when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Glasgow Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Dublin is an obvious place to look, while Amsterdam and other European cities may also become possible when the flight times work. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations are possible on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from Glasgow Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early flight from Glasgow, a late return flight and a quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Flight times change throughout the year, so a destination that makes an excellent day trip on one date may offer very little time on another.

Can I find city breaks from Glasgow Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Glasgow Airport as well as same-day trips.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Glasgow Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Glasgow Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Glasgow Airport cheap?

They can be. Low-cost airlines sometimes offer inexpensive fares from Glasgow, particularly if you are flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Glasgow Airport, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Glasgow?

About London Gatwick Airport

Illustration of Gatwick airport passenger terminal with aircraft taking off.

Gatwick Airport (LGW) is in West Sussex, around 28 miles south of central London. Its location and extensive flight network make it a major departure point for travellers from London, Surrey, Sussex and across the South East.

The airport has two passenger terminals, North Terminal and South Terminal, connected by a free automated shuttle. Gatwick also has its own railway station at South Terminal, with direct train services from London and destinations across the South East.

For an extreme day trip, we recommend planning your travel to and from Gatwick Airport before booking your flights. Some of the best same-day combinations involve a very early departure or late return, so check that your train, coach or other airport transport works with both flights.

    Getting to Gatwick Airport

With its own railway station and frequent train, coach and bus services, Gatwick Airport is well connected to London and the South East. For a same-day trip, check both legs of your journey before booking, especially if your flight leaves early or you arrive back late.

Driving and Parking at Gatwick Airport

Driving can be convenient for very early departures, late arrivals or when travelling with others. Gatwick Airport offers a wide range of parking options across both the North and South terminals, including Short Stay, Long Stay, and valet parking.

If you’re planning an extreme day trip, check which terminal your flights use before choosing a car park, as your outbound and return flights may not necessarily use the same terminal. The North and South terminals are connected by a free shuttle service.

Pre-booking airport parking is often cheaper than paying on the day, especially for longer stays, so compare options and allow enough time to park and reach your departure terminal.

Bus and Coach to Gatwick Airport

Gatwick Airport is well connected by bus and coach, with direct services linking the airport with London and destinations across the South East and wider UK. Coaches serve both the North and South terminals, making them a useful alternative to travelling by train.

National Express operates services between Gatwick and London Victoria as well as a range of other towns, cities and airports. Local Metrobus services also connect Gatwick with nearby destinations including Crawley, Horley and surrounding areas.

Some services operate throughout the night, which can be particularly useful for an extreme day trip involving a very early departure or late return. However, frequencies vary by route and time of day, so check the timetable for your particular travel date before booking your flights.

Getting to Gatwick Airport by Train

Gatwick Airport has its own railway station, located at the South Terminal, making rail one of the easiest ways to reach the airport from London and destinations across the South East.

Direct trains operate from London Victoria, London Bridge, St Pancras International and other London stations, with services also connecting Gatwick with destinations including Brighton and towns and cities further afield. Passengers travelling from the North Terminal can use the airport’s free shuttle between terminals.

For an extreme day trip, check the first and last trains for your particular travel date before booking your flights. This is especially important for very early departures or late-evening arrivals, when services may be less frequent.

    Gatwick Airport Hotels

If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near Gatwick Airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.

Hotels at or very close to the airport include the Sofitel London Gatwick, which is connected to the North Terminal, and the Hilton London Gatwick Airport, connected to the South Terminal. The Premier Inn London Gatwick Airport North Terminal is another convenient option close to the terminal.

Several Gatwick hotels offer packages that combine an overnight stay with airport parking, which can be particularly useful for early morning departures or if public transport doesn’t run early enough for your flight.

Plenty of hotels, guest houses, and B&Bs are also around Horley and Crawley, often within a short drive of the airport. It is worth comparing the total cost of accommodation, parking and transfers rather than choosing on room price alone.

    Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up

Gatwick Airport has dedicated drop-off zones immediately outside both the North and South terminals. These are convenient for a quick drop-off, but they charge £10 for up to 10 minutes, then £1 for each additional minute up to 20 minutes. The maximum charge is £30, and the maximum stay is 30 minutes. You must pay by midnight on the day after you use the drop-off zone.

For collecting passengers, Gatwick recommends using the Short Stay car parks, which are only a few minutes’ walk from the terminals. Turn-up prices currently start at £8 for up to 30 minutes and rise to £14 for up to an hour. Express pick-up areas are also available within the Short Stay car parks at Car Park 6, Level 4 for North Terminal and Car Park 3, Ground Floor for South Terminal.

There is also a useful free option. Gatwick’s Long Stay car parks offer up to two hours’ free parking, with a free shuttle bus connecting the car parks with the terminals. This can be worth considering if you are collecting someone and don’t need to meet them immediately outside the terminal.

Extreme Day Trips from Gatwick Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Gatwick Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from Gatwick Airport?

Yes. Gatwick Airport’s extensive flight network means a wide range of destinations can potentially work as same-day trips when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Gatwick Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Gatwick has flights to destinations across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe, but the important factor for a day trip is the combination of outbound and return flight times. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations could work on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from Gatwick Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early departure from Gatwick, a late return flight and a relatively quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Shorter European routes can work particularly well, but Gatwick’s large network means destinations further afield can sometimes become realistic day trips too. Flight times change throughout the year, so check your particular date before deciding where to go.

Can I find city breaks from Gatwick Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Gatwick Airport as well as same-day trips. Choose your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, and the Flight Finder will search published schedules for destinations that could fit your trip. Staying for one, two or three nights can open up considerably more destinations and flight combinations.

For airports some distance from the city centre, the amount of usable time can be considerably shorter.

Which Gatwick terminal does my flight use?

Gatwick Airport has two passenger terminals, North Terminal and South Terminal. Airlines and individual flights can use different terminals, so check the terminal shown on your booking before travelling. The two terminals are connected by a free automated shuttle, but you should still allow additional time if you need to travel between them.

Can I fly from one Gatwick terminal and return to the other?

Potentially, yes. Your outbound and return flights may not necessarily use the same terminal, particularly if you are travelling with different airlines. Check both flights before arranging parking, drop-off or collection. If you do return to a different terminal, Gatwick’s free shuttle connects the North and South terminals.

Can I get to Gatwick early enough for an extreme day trip?

Gatwick has its own railway station and is served by trains, coaches, buses and road connections, making very early departures possible for many travellers. However, public transport frequencies can be reduced early in the morning, overnight and at weekends. Check your complete journey to Gatwick before booking an early flight rather than assuming your normal train or coach service will be running.

Can I get home from Gatwick after a late return flight?

Often, but this depends on where you live and what time your flight arrives. Check the last train, coach or bus for your route before booking. Remember to allow time after the scheduled landing for taxiing, leaving the aircraft and passing through the airport. If public transport does not work with your return flight, driving, airport parking or staying at a Gatwick hotel may be worth considering.

How early should I arrive at Gatwick Airport?

Allow enough time for check-in if required, security and reaching your departure gate. The time you need will depend on your airline, destination and circumstances, so check the latest advice from Gatwick Airport and your airline before travelling. An extreme day trip is already a time-sensitive journey, so trying to save sightseeing time by arriving unusually late at the airport isn’t worth the risk of missing your flight.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Gatwick Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Gatwick Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Gatwick Airport cheap?

They can be. Gatwick’s large choice of routes and airlines can produce inexpensive fares, particularly if you are flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Gatwick, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there. The cheapest flight does not always produce the cheapest day trip overall.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Gatwick Airport?

Not necessarily, but you will need identification that meets your airline’s requirements. Depending on the airline, acceptable photographic identification may include a passport, photocard driving licence or another document accepted by the airline. For international flights, check the passport and entry requirements for your destination before booking.

What happens if there isn’t a suitable return flight on the same day?

Consider turning it into a city break or weekend away. Staying for one or more nights can make many more destinations possible and may provide much better flight times. The Days & Stays Flight Finder can search for both same-day trips and short breaks.

Can I book flights through Days & Stays?

Days & Stays is a travel discovery service, not an airline, travel agent or booking provider. We search published flight schedules to help you identify possible trips and may provide links to third-party booking providers where you can check current fares and availability. Planning Your Trip from East Midlands Airport

Illustration of planning an extreme day trip from East Midlands Airport with flights, transfers, travel documents and timings.

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture.

    Check Your Travel Documents

For international trips, check your destination’s passport, visa and travel authorisation requirements before booking.

    Allow for Things Going Wrong

Delays matter more when you only have a day, and a cancellation could leave you needing an unexpected overnight stay.

Check whether your flights are on the same or separate bookings, consider appropriate travel insurance and have a plan for disruption.

Extreme Day Trips from East Midlands Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from East Midlands Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from East Midlands Airport?

Yes. A number of destinations can be possible as same-day trips from East Midlands Airport when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from East Midlands Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Some destinations can offer useful same-day flight combinations from East Midlands Airport, while others may become possible only on particular days or during seasonal flying programmes. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations are possible on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from East Midlands Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early flight from East Midlands Airport, a late return flight and a quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Flight times change throughout the year, so a destination that makes an excellent day trip on one date may offer very little time on another.

Can I find city breaks from East Midlands Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from East Midlands Airport as well as same-day trips.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from East Midlands Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose East Midlands Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from East Midlands Airport cheap?

They can be. Low-cost airlines sometimes offer inexpensive fares from East Midlands Airport, particularly if you are flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to the airport, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from East Midlands Airport?

Direct Flights from Edinburgh Airport

Illustrated view of Edinburgh Airport with an aircraft taking off and flight routes from Edinburgh across Europe.

Edinburgh Airport offers a wide range of day trips and short breaks, though routes and frequencies vary by date and season. We analyse published flight schedules to identify destinations with useful timings, including those offering 8, 10 or 12 hours between flights and routes that work particularly well for weekend trips. Use the Days & Stays Flight Finder above to check the options for your travel date.

Where Can You Go for a Day Trip from Edinburgh Airport?

The answer changes with the flight schedule. A destination that’s perfect for an extreme day trip on one date may have no suitable same-day return on another.

Dublin and London are obvious choices, but don’t rule out destinations further afield. With an early departure from Edinburgh and a late flight home, cities across Europe can potentially become realistic day trips.

Flight time is only part of the equation. Airport transfers matter too, so Days & Stays looks for flight combinations, while our destination guides help you work out how much useful time you’ll have on arrival.

City Breaks & Weekend Breaks from Edinburgh Airport

If the flight times aren’t right for a day trip, city breaks and short breaks from Edinburgh Airport open up many more possibilities, particularly if you can stay for one or two nights.

Cities such as Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Prague, Copenhagen, Lisbon and Berlin can all be good choices for a city break or weekend away, with plenty more destinations across Europe to choose from.

The Days & Stays Flight Finder searches published flight schedules for both same-day trips and short breaks, helping you discover where you could go with the time you have available.

Our destination guides include airport transfers and what you can realistically do once you arrive.

Where Are the Cheapest Flights from Edinburgh?

No single destination is always cheapest. Fares vary by date, demand, and how far ahead you book.

Rather than choosing somewhere because it is normally considered cheap, compare the total cost of the trip, including travel to Edinburgh Airport, destination transfers, accommodation if required and anything you want to do while you’re there.

    Beach, Sunshine or Something Different?

Edinburgh isn’t limited to city breaks. Direct flights also serve holiday destinations across Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and Italy, as well as the Canary Islands. Depending on the season, the network also opens up less obvious possibilities across Scandinavia, Central and Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean.

Some routes are seasonal, and others operate only on certain days of the week.

Days & Stays searches all available published schedules, helping you discover seasonal routes and possibilities for both day trips and short breaks.

Illustration of Edinburgh Airport for Days & Stays.

Edinburgh Airport (EDI) is around eight miles west of Edinburgh city centre and is Scotland’s busiest airport. It is particularly convenient for travellers from Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and much of central Scotland.

The airport has a single passenger terminal, making it relatively straightforward to navigate. Edinburgh Airport does not have its own mainline railway station, but it is connected to the city by tram and frequent bus services, with connections available to the wider rail network.

For an extreme day trip, we recommend planning your travel to and from Edinburgh Airport before booking your flights. Some of the most useful same-day combinations depart early in the morning or return late at night, so check that your chosen transport option operates at the times you need.

    Getting to Edinburgh Airport

Edinburgh Airport is well connected by tram, bus and coach, as well as by road. For a same-day trip, check your journey in both directions before booking, particularly if your flight leaves early or arrives back late. The tram provides a useful connection between the airport and Edinburgh city centre, with stops linking to the wider rail network.

Driving and Parking at Edinburgh Airport

Driving can be convenient for early departures or when travelling with others.

Edinburgh Airport offers several parking options, from car parks close to the terminal to longer-stay, budget facilities. Pre-booking can save money, so it is worth comparing options before you travel.

Tram, Bus and Coach to Edinburgh Airport

Edinburgh Airport is well connected by tram, bus and coach, making public transport a practical option for early departures and late returns.

Edinburgh Trams run between the airport and the city centre, serving stops including Edinburgh Park, Haymarket, Princes Street and St Andrew Square. The journey between the airport and central Edinburgh takes around 30 to 35 minutes.

Airlink 100 connects Edinburgh Airport with the city centre, terminating at Waverley Bridge close to Princes Street and the main rail and bus stations. Services operate 24 hours a day.

Service 17 connects the airport with north Edinburgh and Ocean Terminal, serving areas including Clermiston, Blackhall, Drylaw, Muirhouse and Newhaven.

Service 18 connects the airport with south Edinburgh and Fort Kinnaird, serving areas including Edinburgh Park, Fairmilehead, the Royal Infirmary and Oxgangs.

There are also coach and bus connections from further afield, making Edinburgh Airport accessible from other parts of Scotland without travelling into central Edinburgh first.

For an extreme day trip, check the timetable for your outbound and return journeys, particularly if you are considering one of the earliest flights of the day or arriving back late at night.

👉 Check transport options to and from Edinburgh Airport

Getting to Edinburgh Airport by Train

Edinburgh Airport does not have its own railway station.

The nearest station is Edinburgh Gateway, which is connected to the airport by tram. Trains serve Edinburgh Gateway from Edinburgh, Fife and other parts of Scotland, making it a useful interchange for airport journeys.

Another option is to take the train to Edinburgh Waverley or Haymarket, then continue to the airport by tram or bus. When planning an extreme day trip, allow enough time to transfer between the train and airport transport, especially for early departures and late arrivals.

    Edinburgh Airport Hotels

If your flight leaves particularly early, staying near the airport the night before can make the start of your trip considerably easier.

Three convenient options are Hampton by Hilton Edinburgh Airport, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the terminal, DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh Airport, which provides a short complimentary shuttle to the terminal, and Moxy Edinburgh Airport, another option close to the airport. Edinburgh Airport itself lists the Hampton and DoubleTree among its airport hotel options.

It is worth comparing room rates and any parking packages with the cost of booking accommodation and airport parking separately, particularly if you would otherwise have a long journey to Edinburgh in the early hours.

    Taxi, Drop-off and Pick-up

Edinburgh Airport’s charged pickup and drop-off zone is on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park, close to the terminal. Current charges start at £8.50 for up to 10 minutes, with additional time charged at £1 per minute. The airport’s car parks are cashless.

Alternatively, the free Pickup & Drop-off area is in the Long Stay car park and allows up to 30 minutes free of charge. There is no shuttle bus, so passengers should allow around 10 minutes to walk to the terminal.

Days & Stays tip: If you’re being dropped off for an extreme day trip and don’t mind the short walk, the free Long Stay option can save the £8.50 drop-off charge.

For the latest charges and locations, check Edinburgh Airport’s official Pickup & Drop-off information before travelling.

Planning Your Trip from Edinburgh Airport

Illustration of planning an extreme day trip from Edinburgh Airport with flights, transfers, travel documents and timings.

Whether you’re planning an extreme day trip or a short break, the flight times are only part of the picture. It’s also worth thinking about how you’ll get to Edinburgh Airport, how quickly you can reach your destination after landing, and how much time you’ll realistically have before your return flight.

More help: Read our guide to planning an extreme day trip, including delays, cancellations, travel insurance, separate flight bookings and passenger rights.

    Things to Do

For an extreme day trip, it’s worth booking popular attractions, tours and experiences in advance. Spending an hour queuing isn’t ideal when you only have a day.

Extreme Day Trips from Edinburgh Airport FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about extreme day trips, city breaks, weekend breaks, same-day flights and planning a trip from Edinburgh Airport.

Can you do an extreme day trip from Edinburgh Airport?

Yes. A number of destinations can be possible as same-day trips from Edinburgh when there is an early outbound flight and a sufficiently late return. The options vary by date and season, which is why the Days & Stays Flight Finder searches the published schedules for the date you choose.

Where can I fly from Edinburgh Airport and return the same day?

It depends on your travel date. Destinations in the UK, Ireland and continental Europe can offer useful same-day combinations from Edinburgh, depending on the flight schedules. Rather than relying on a fixed list, use the Days & Stays Flight Finder to see which destinations are possible on your chosen date.

What are the best extreme day trips from Edinburgh Airport?

The most practical destinations usually combine an early flight from Edinburgh, a late return flight and a quick journey from the destination airport into the city. Flight times change throughout the year, so a destination that makes an excellent day trip on one date may offer very little time on another.

Can I find city breaks from Edinburgh Airport?

Yes. Days & Stays can help you find city breaks from Edinburgh Airport as well as same-day trips.

How far ahead can I search for day trips from Edinburgh Airport?

Days & Stays lets you search available published flight schedules rather than limiting you to the next few weeks. This can help you find seasonal routes and future trip possibilities that aren’t operating right now. How far ahead you can search depends on the schedules currently published by the airlines.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. You don’t need to register, create an account or log in to use the Days & Stays Flight Finder. Choose Edinburgh Airport, select your travel date and how long you’d like to be away, then search the available published schedules.

Are extreme day trips from Edinburgh Airport cheap?

They can be. Low-cost airlines sometimes offer inexpensive fares from Edinburgh, particularly if you are flexible about your destination and travel date. Look at the total cost of the trip, including flights, travel to Edinburgh Airport, parking if required, destination transfers and anything you want to book while you’re there.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight from Edinburgh?
