Where is Bath Christmas Market? Map and directions
Unlike some Christmas markets, Bath Christmas Market isn’t confined to a single square or enclosed site. Instead, its chalets are spread through the historic city centre, from Abbeygate Street in the south to Milsom Street in the north.
The busiest and most atmospheric sections are normally around Bath Abbey, the Roman Baths, Abbey Churchyard, Bath Street and the surrounding pedestrianised streets. Other market zones extend towards Union Street and Milsom Street.
For navigation, the organisers use Stall Street, Bath, BA1 1QH as the central postcode. It should not be treated as a parking destination because road closures and access restrictions are in effect within the event area.
The official Bath Christmas Market interactive map shows the different market areas and can help you find individual stallholders and facilities around the city centre. Check the map before you visit, especially if you want to find a specific trader or part of the market.
We visited Bath Christmas Market on a Saturday in 2025, combining the market with Bath Abbey, Pulteney Bridge and some time exploring the wider city centre.
Traffic was busy as we approached Bath from South Somerset, but Newbridge Park and Ride was well signposted and surprisingly easy to use. We parked without difficulty and were soon on a warm bus into the centre. The journey took around 15 minutes and removed the uncertainty of finding a city centre parking space on one of the market’s busiest days.
Aside from the market itself, Bath Abbey was the highlight of our visit. Winter sunlight illuminated the stained glass and famous fan-vaulted ceiling, while London Concertante happened to be rehearsing for a performance that evening. The Discovery Centre added useful context about the site’s long history, from its monastic origins to the Reformation and the building visitors see today.
After leaving the Abbey, we walked towards the River Avon for the classic view of Pulteney Bridge before returning to the Christmas Market. The market was busy, as we expected on a Saturday, but it did not feel overwhelming during our visit.
The stalls offered a varied mixture of crafts, gifts, local produce and festive food and drink. We also dipped in and out of Bath’s permanent shops and stopped for tea and homemade shortbread at the Guildhall Market Café.

As daylight faded, we finished with Indian street food from Chai Walla. The food was generous, warming and excellent value, making it a particularly good informal option close to the market.
Having experienced it ourselves, we can confirm that Bath provides an unusually impressive setting for a Christmas market. Wooden chalets fill streets framed by Bath Abbey, the Roman Baths and the warm stone buildings of the city centre.
The emphasis is on gifts, crafts, homeware, jewellery and seasonal food and drink, with local makers and independent businesses represented alongside traders from farther afield. Visitors can also expect festive entertainment, although the detailed 2026 programme has not yet been published.
The Lodge will also return for 2026, providing a dedicated bar area in the heart of the Christmas Market.
Unlike a ticketed Christmas attraction, this is a free city centre event. You can walk through part of the market, combine it with shopping elsewhere in Bath or make it the focus of a full day.
The market is open air, so warm layers and a waterproof jacket are sensible. Some central streets have historic paving, while large crowds can make movement slower at the busiest times.
When is the best time to visit Bath Christmas Market?
Bath Christmas Market attracts large numbers of visitors, particularly at weekends. We visited on a Saturday and found it busy without being overwhelming, although conditions will vary considerably depending on the date, time, and weather. If you have flexibility, a weekday morning is still likely to offer a quieter visit. Arriving close to the 10 am opening time should give you an opportunity to explore before the largest daytime crowds arrive.
Late afternoons and evenings have a different atmosphere as the lights come on, although they can also be busier. Fridays, Saturdays and the final weekend are likely to be among the busiest times to visit.
The organisers have now confirmed quiet shopping on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 am to noon. No large-scale entertainment will be scheduled during these periods, making them better suited to visitors with sensory sensitivities.

We wouldn’t recommend driving into Bath city centre during the Christmas Market unless you have a particular reason to do so. City centre car parks remain available, but traffic can be heavy, spaces fill quickly, and temporary restrictions affect some roads around the market.
The organisers recommend using public transport or one of Bath’s three Park and Ride services where possible. We used Newbridge Park and Ride for our Saturday visit in 2025. Despite heavy traffic on the approach to Bath, we found the site easy to locate and use, and the bus journey into the centre took around 15 minutes. We consider Park and Ride the most straightforward option for many visitors approaching by car.
If you do park centrally, check Bath and North East Somerset Council’s current Bath car park information before travelling. Charlotte Street, Avon Street and Manvers Street are among the larger options, but availability is not guaranteed.
Bath also operates a Clean Air Zone, but private cars and motorcycles are not charged. Charges may apply to some higher-emission taxis, vans, minibuses, coaches and other commercial vehicles, so drivers of these vehicles should check their registration before travelling.
Road closures and the final Christmas Market traffic arrangements will be published nearer the event. Do not rely on a route through Stall Street, Bath Street or the Abbey Quarter.
Bath Park and Ride for the Christmas Market
Bath Park and Ride bus. (Credit: ThisIsSouthWest)
Bath has three Park and Ride sites:
● Odd Down, serving approaches from the south. Sat nav: BA2 8PA
● Newbridge, serving approaches from the west and the site we used for our 2025 visit. Sat nav: BA1 3NB
● Lansdown, serving approaches from the north. Sat nav: BA1 9BJ
All three provide regular buses into central Bath and operate seven days a week. Services currently run until 11.30 pm Monday to Saturday and 6 pm on Sundays and public holidays, making Park & Ride practical for an evening visit as well as during the day.
Bath’s Park and Ride services will run more frequently during the Christmas Market, with additional buses and later evening services. On Saturdays, buses are planned to run as often as every five minutes for much of the day, with enhanced services also operating on weekdays and Sundays. Check the latest timetable before travelling, particularly if you plan to stay into the evening.
Park and Ride is particularly useful at weekends, when both traffic and demand for central parking are likely to be highest. Allow additional time for queues on the busiest dates and check the last return bus if staying into the evening.
Getting to Bath Christmas Market by train
Departure boards showing train services and departure information.
Bath Spa is the nearest railway station and is only a short walk from the southern end of the market.
Leave the station towards SouthGate and continue north through the shopping area. Stall Street and Bath Street lead towards the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and the central market streets.
Direct trains serve Bath Spa from Bristol Temple Meads, London Paddington, Cardiff, Swindon and several other locations. Bristol Temple Meads is around 15 minutes away by the fastest services, making rail a practical option for visitors from across the wider region.
Train services can be particularly busy during the Christmas Market. Planned engineering work is expected to affect some rail journeys between London and Bath on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November 2026, so check your journey carefully if travelling on the opening weekend. On other dates, check for engineering work and the last train home before travelling.
Bath is well served by local and regional buses, with direct services from places including Bristol, Chippenham, Corsham, Keynsham, Midsomer Norton, Radstock and surrounding towns and villages. Most services arrive in or close to the city centre, leaving only a short walk to the Christmas Market.
Bath (Bus Station) is beside Bath Spa railway station and SouthGate, close to the southern end of the Christmas Market. From here, you can walk towards Bath Street, the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey before continuing through the market towards Milsom Street.
Visitors travelling from outside Bath should check their route and return journey before setting off, particularly for an evening visit or on Sundays. A BathRider ticket is also available for journeys involving more than one bus operator within the Bath urban area.
Bath Christmas Market coach trips and coach parking
If you are visiting Bath Christmas Market on an organised coach trip, coaches use a dedicated drop-off and collection area at Royal Avenue, close to the Royal Crescent and Royal Victoria Park.
From Royal Avenue, it is around a ten-minute walk to Milsom Street at the northern end of the Christmas Market. From there, the market continues through the city centre towards Bath Abbey. Bear in mind that the walk back to Royal Avenue is slightly uphill.
Your coach may park elsewhere after dropping passengers off, so make a note of your exact collection point and return time before heading into the city. Allow plenty of time to walk back, particularly on busy Saturdays when the market and surrounding streets can be crowded.
Accessibility
Bath Christmas Market is spread across public streets rather than contained within a purpose-built venue. Most sections are within the central shopping area, although historic paving, gradients and crowds may affect some visitors.
Accessible event toilets will be available at Terrace Walk, Bilbury Lane and Royal Avenue. Changing Places toilets are available at Bath Leisure Centre and SouthGate Vaults, while Bath Central Library provides a quiet place for visitors who need somewhere to rest or decompress.
Blue Badge parking is available in and around the city centre, although event road closures may affect some spaces on Cheap Street, Westgate Street and Upper Borough Walls.
Visitors with specific access requirements should check the official accessibility information before travelling. The interactive market map can also help identify facilities and plan a route between the different market areas.
Is Bath Christmas Market free?

Yes. Bath Christmas Market is free to enter, and tickets are not required for the market itself.
You will need to pay separately for food, drink and purchases, as well as any ticketed attractions or events elsewhere in Bath. This distinction is worth checking when planning a visit because Bath hosts several other festive activities alongside the market.
Make a Day of Your Bath Christmas Market Visit
Bath Christmas Market can easily be combined with the city’s permanent attractions, shops and seasonal events. That was one of the best things about our visit, and with so much more to see and do in Bath, we plan to make a weekend of it next time.
The Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and the Victoria Art Gallery are close to the market. We visited Bath Abbey, walked to see Pulteney Bridge and explored Bath Guildhall Market without needing to move the car or use additional transport. Farther west, Royal Victoria Park hosts Bath on Ice. The ice skating attraction has confirmed that it will return in November 2026, although its detailed dates and ticket information are still to be announced.
Many attractions become busy during the market, so advance booking may be advisable where timed admission applies. Restaurant reservations are also worth considering for weekends and evening visits.
Bath Christmas Market hotels and places to stay
Staying overnight lets you see the market after dark without worrying about the last train or the Park and Ride bus. It also creates time for the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and other parts of the city.
The most convenient Bath Christmas Market hotels are in the city centre, particularly around SouthGate, Bath Spa station, Queen Square and the northern city centre. Prices can rise substantially on market weekends, so booking early is advisable.
Visitors looking for lower prices could also consider accommodation near a railway station with a direct service to Bath Spa, including Bristol, Chippenham or Bradford on Avon. Always check the final evening train before choosing this option.
Useful things to take
Bath Christmas Market is outdoors, and a visit can involve several hours of walking around the city.
● A compact power bank for maps, photographs and digital rail or bus tickets
● A packable waterproof jacket for changeable winter weather
● A small travel umbrella that is manageable in busy streets
How long should you allow?
Allow at least two to three hours if your main aim is to browse the market. A full day is better if you also want to visit the Roman Baths, have lunch or explore Bath’s independent shops.
Crowds can slow progress, and the market extends across several streets. Build additional time into a weekend visit, especially if arriving by road or planning a timed attraction.
Is Bath Christmas Market worth visiting? Our verdict
Pulteney Bridge and the River Avon in Bath. (Credit: ThisIsSouthWest)
Yes. Definitely. It is one of the best Christmas Markets in South West England.
We visited Bath Christmas Market on a Saturday in 2025. The market was busy but not overwhelming. Newbridge Park and Ride made the journey into central Bath pleasantly straightforward, and combining the market with Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge made it feel like a complete winter day out rather than simply a shopping trip.
Its popularity is also its main drawback. Weekends can be extremely busy, and driving into central Bath adds unnecessary uncertainty for many visitors. An early weekday visit, travelling by train or Park and Ride, should provide the most comfortable experience.
We will continue to update this guide as further details about the 2026 entertainment programme, road closures and any changes to travel or accessibility arrangements are confirmed.
Although we make every effort to keep this independent guide up to date, opening times, stall locations, entertainment, road closures, parking and public transport arrangements may change at short notice. Outdoor events can also be affected by weather and operational requirements. We recommend checking the official Bath Christmas Market website and social media pages shortly before travelling.

Good news at last for rail travellers in the South West. South Western Railway and Network Rail have confirmed that the full West of England Line timetable will be reinstated from Saturday 29 November, restoring hourly London Waterloo–Exeter St Davids services and normal journey times.
Tom Desmond, Network Rail’s Wessex Route Operations Director, speaking on behalf of South Western Railway and Network Rail, said:
“We can confirm that we are set to restore the full timetable on the West of England Line on Saturday 29 November. We know just how important this line is to its local communities, with our customers using services to reach their places of work, or local schools and colleges.
“We have closely monitored ground conditions and are now able to start track repairs. Once those repairs are complete, trains will be able to run at full line speeds, bringing the full timetable back into operation.
“We are very grateful to our customers for their continued patience and would like to sincerely apologise for the disruption they have experienced since August.”
The announcement ends more than three months of disruption that halved the route’s frequency after extreme summer heat and soil movement damaged embankments between Gillingham (Dorset) and Axminster (Devon).
Service returns after three months of disruption
From 11 August 2025, SWR introduced a temporary two-hourly timetable while engineers imposed a 40 mph speed limit through the unstable section. What should have been a straightforward three-hour journey often stretched close to four.
At Crewkerne, services were even suspended for several days while monitoring and drainage works were carried out. Now, with the ground stabilised, the full hourly pattern will resume, restoring direct connections through Yeovil Junction, Crewkerne, Axminster, and Honiton.
A Network Rail spokesperson said that following months of monitoring and reinforcement work, ground conditions had stabilised sufficiently for the speed restrictions to be lifted and the full timetable to return. The company thanked passengers and communities along the route for their patience.
Why the slowdown happened
The disruption was caused by soil-moisture deficit, the shrinking and cracking of clay embankments after prolonged dry weather. Much of the West of England Line sits on Victorian earthworks never designed for modern trains or today’s changing climate.
Network Rail explained earlier this year that because track levels had been disturbed, trains could not travel safely at normal speeds. The single-track layout west of Salisbury made matters worse: when one train slowed, delays spread in both directions.
Climate change and an ageing network
This summer’s disruption has been described as one of the clearest examples yet of climate-driven stress on Britain’s railway. Hot, dry spells cause clay to shrink; heavy rain then destabilises the slopes.
As reported by The Guardian, the episode was one of the first widespread examples of climate-related track deformation in Britain’s modern network. Network Rail’s own Soil Moisture Deficit on the Railway briefing warns that similar issues will return unless adaptation work, better drainage, stronger slopes and continuous ground monitoring is prioritised.
Impact on passengers and communities
For many in rural Dorset, Somerset, and East Devon, the reduced timetable was more than an inconvenience. It disrupted working lives, studies, and tourism-related trade.
Commuters from Honiton and Crewkerne reported missed connections and unreliable travel. SWR apologised but emphasised that safety had to come first. The Dartmoor Railway Association warned in September that the amended timetable could last for several months, while parish councils from Gittisham to Crewkerne underlined how dependent their residents are on the line.
Trackside businesses feel the strain
The Railway Kitchen, Axminster (Credit: ThisIsSouthWest)
The reduced timetable has not only affected travellers but also the small independent businesses that rely on regular footfall from the line. At Axminster Station, The Railway Kitchen, which sits directly on the platform, described the last few months as particularly difficult.
In a recent Facebook post, the café said:
“We are pleased to hear that the line will return to an hourly service at the end of the month. We have seen a significant drop in customer numbers since August 12th. However, since our recent post a few weeks ago, the support from our community has been incredibly strong, and it has been lovely to see so many familiar faces again.”
The café added that this time of year normally brings an increase in visitors heading to the Exeter Christmas Market, festive events, and winter sports fixtures, and that the restoration of the hourly timetable should “bring some festive cheer and renewed hope to everyone.”
Economic ripples
Although no formal figure has been released, the financial impact is thought to be significant. The Peninsula Rail Task Force’s Closing the Gap report predicted £7.2 billion in long-term regional growth from improved rail investment, while the 2014 Dawlish closure cost an estimated £1.2 billion.
The 2025 slowdown was far smaller, but it again showed how fragile the South West’s economy becomes when its transport arteries falter.
Political pressure and calls for action
Regional MPs have welcomed the restoration of the timetable but stressed that lessons must be learned.
Adam Dance, MP for Yeovil, said on Facebook:
“Good news – from 29 November, the West of England Line between London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids will return to an hourly service, meaning more regular trains stopping at Crewkerne and Yeovil Junction.”
Richard Foord, MP for Honiton & Sidmouth, told Parliament in September that the struggle with rail infrastructure was not an occasional disruption but an everyday reality. He said journeys that should take a little over three hours were being dragged out to nearly four, and renewed calls for limited dualling near Whimple to improve reliability.
David Reed, MP for Exmouth & Exeter East, added that buses were no substitute for a reliable, frequent rail service and warned that the West of England Line must not be left behind as other regions modernise.
Could it have been prevented?
The vulnerability of this route was flagged long ago. The West of England Line Study (2020) highlighted the risks from unstable embankments and single-track sections but its recommendations for dualling and reinforcement were postponed.
The Peninsula Rail Task Force later warned that limited investment west of Salisbury leaves the South West more exposed to disruption from extreme weather.
Rail specialists say that modest upgrades, improved drainage, polymer-stabilised soils, and continuous moisture sensors could have averted this summer’s restrictions. As The Times observed, the clay is not new, but it is drying out faster; the challenge is to build a railway that can cope with that reality.
Looking ahead
With full service returning on 29 November, Network Rail will continue to reinforce slopes and trial polymer-treated clays with Cranfield University and the British Geological Survey.
Latest Information
Latest information: South Western Railway has confirmed that the full West of England Line timetable between London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids will resume from Saturday, 29 November 2025. Temporary speed restrictions between Gillingham and Axminster remain in place until then, meaning longer journeys and reduced frequency for the next few weeks. Travellers can find the latest service updates and planned engineering details on the operator’s website: West of England Line Changes.
Our view
For passengers and communities alike, this restoration is more than a return to normal; it is a reminder of how vital the line is to the region’s identity and economy.
The West of England Line has carried generations of travellers through Dorset, Somerset, and Devon. Its future now depends on facing modern realities: hotter summers, heavier rain, and the need for lasting investment.
When hourly trains resume on 29 November, it will be a welcome sight, and we hope a signal that the South West’s railway resilience is finally moving up the national agenda.
