Update (08/08/26): Red Arrows Lyme Regis display cancelled
The Red Arrows display planned for 11.30 am on Sunday 16 August 2026 has unfortunately been cancelled after poor weather in north-eastern Canada delayed the team’s return from its North American tour. It is a major disappointment for Lyme Regis, the organisers and the many visitors who had hoped to see the display.
Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week will still go ahead from 15 to 23 August 2026, with its wider programme of RNLI fundraising, family activities and entertainment continuing as planned. Subject to weather and operational conditions, there will also still be flying activity during the week.
In its update of 8 August, the RAF announced Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flypasts over Lyme Regis on 21 and 22 August. The aircraft and timings have not yet been specified, and all flying remains subject to weather, aircraft availability and operational requirements.
These BBMF flypasts are separate from the display by two privately owned Supermarine Spitfires scheduled for 6 pm on Wednesday 19 August as part of Lifeboat Week.
The RAF expects the Red Arrows to resume their multi-stage Atlantic crossing during the week beginning 10 August, subject to suitable weather and operational conditions. The team’s safe return will determine when its 2026 display season can recommence.
Sidmouth Regatta Airshow is currently planned to go ahead on Friday 28 August 2026. The Red Arrows remain scheduled to appear, but their participation will depend on the team’s safe return from Canada, aircraft serviceability, weather and operational requirements. Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week 2026
Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week runs from Saturday 15 to Sunday 23 August 2026, celebrating the 200th anniversary of a lifeboat being stationed in the town. The programme combines fundraising activities, emergency service demonstrations, music, family entertainment, and beach events.
Opening day includes the official ceremony at noon and the Bathtub Race at 7 pm. Other highlights include a chip pan fire demonstration and a fire and rescue exercise on Monday, Damsels in Distress and a lifeguard display on Tuesday, and military vehicles, the Greasy Pole, and two Spitfires on Wednesday.
Thursday includes model boats, crab fishing, Conger Cuddling and birds of prey. The final weekend features a sandcastle competition, swimming challenge, beach tug of war, duck race and fun run.
Many activities are free to watch, although donations are encouraged. Some competitive events require registration or booking through the official RNLI event page.
The official Lifeboat Week programme can be viewed online. Printed copies cost £3 and can be purchased from the Lyme Regis and Beer RNLI shops and participating businesses around the area. Buying one is an excellent way to support the RNLI.
Some earlier Lifeboat Week publicity may still show the Red Arrows display, but the appearance on 16 August 2026 has been cancelled.
Where to eat during Lifeboat Week
Several Lyme Regis food businesses have supported Lifeboat Week by advertising in the official programme. Those near the seafront include Poco Pizza, SWIM, The Harbour Inn, The Royal Standard, Waffle Lyme and Strawberry Tree.
Poco Pizza on Marine Parade serves freshly prepared pizzas overlooking the beach. Nearby, SWIM opens for breakfast and continues throughout the day with burgers, crab sandwiches and other informal meals, accompanied by views across Lyme Bay.
The Harbour Inn on Marine Parade serves seafood, pub meals and drinks close to the main viewing area. The Royal Standard, near the harbour, is a family-run pub serving food from noon until 9 pm, including Palmers ales and traditional pub dishes.
Waffle Lyme provides a more casual option for waffles, drinks and lighter refreshments. Strawberry Tree specialises in Spanish tapas, while the Alexandra Hotel offers locally influenced dining in a more formal setting above the seafront.
Lyme Regis will be busy during lifeboat week. Reserve a table wherever possible and check Sunday opening times directly with the business before travelling.
Bringing water and a small amount of food may also be sensible, especially for families arriving early. Please use the bins provided or take litter home.
Where to stay in Lyme Regis for Lifeboat Week
Accommodation in Lyme Regis is likely to fill quickly because Lifeboat Week takes place during the school summer holidays. Staying within walking distance of the seafront avoids the pressure of parking and traffic. Compare hotels, guesthouses and self-catering accommodation in Lyme Regis and look for flexible cancellation options where available.
The Alexandra Hotel is a family-owned boutique hotel set in gardens above Lyme Bay, within a short walk of the town centre and seafront. Its elevated position, sea views and central location make it particularly convenient for the weekend.
The Royal Standard is a family-run pub beside the Cobb with three bed and breakfast rooms. It is one of the closest accommodation options to the harbour and central viewing areas, although its location means the busiest parts of town will surround it.
For self-catering accommodation, Toad Hall Cottages represents cottages in Lyme Regis and surrounding coastal communities. A property with private parking and pedestrian access to the town would be particularly useful.
Newlands Holiday Park in nearby Charmouth provides lodges, caravans, apartments, rooms, touring pitches and camping. It also has leisure facilities, a restaurant and family play areas, making it a practical option for longer stays during Lifeboat Week. Travel into Lyme Regis will still require planning because roads are expected to be exceptionally busy.
Other possible bases include Charmouth, Axminster, Bridport, Seaton and Beer.
Book as soon as possible and look for flexible cancellation terms.
